Who Is Princess Athena Of Denmark?

Princess Athena

Princess Athena (now Countess Athena) of Denmark is the only daughter of Prince Joachim and the second child he has with his second wife, Princess Marie. She has three older brothers: half-brothers Nikolai and Felix and brother Henrik. Her middle names are in honour of both her grandmothers and her mother.

Born on January 24 2012, as a princess of Denmark, Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie is the youngest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik. She currently sits at 9th place in the Danish line of succession, behind her brothers and four older cousins, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

Princess Athena’s Godparents

The now Countess Athena’s godparents are:

  • Gregory Grandet – maternal uncle – half-brother of her mother
  • Edouard Cavallier – maternal uncle – half brother of her mother
  • Carina Axelsson – then-girlfriend (now wife) of her father’s cousin
  • Julie Mirabaud
  • Diego de Lavandeyra
  • Henriette Steenstrup

Princess Athena once resided with her parents and brother in France before they moved to Washington, DC. She has attended schools in France and Washington, DC, with her brother.

There was controversy in 2022 when it was announced by Queen Margrethe II that starting January 1 2023, Athena and her three brothers would be losing their HRH prefixes and Princely titles and would be made HE (His/Her Excellency) Count/ess of Monpezat.

Joachim, Marie and his first wife, Alexandra, were furious that their children were losing their titles and, therefore, their identities. Allegedly, Athena was even bullied at school because she lost her title.
