Lucy Lane has been a bit of a question mark since her last appearance in the Supergirl Season 1 finale. There has been no reference to her by anyone, but with Season 2 of Superman & Lois coming, we’ll be able to get an answer of sorts. That’s right, Jenna Dewan is returning to the Arrowverse to reprise her role as Lois’ little sister, as per Andy Swift of TVLine.
The return of Lucy will mark the first time a reoccurring character who has had a profound impact from Supergirl has appeared who has been portrayed by the same actor. We’re not including Sam Lane or Morgan Edge because they were both played by different actors previously. However, Morgan Edge in Superman & Lois was just an alias for Tal-Rho.
Going back to Lucy, let’s revisit her pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths life.
Major Lucy Lane – Pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths
Like Lois, Lucy was raised as a military brat as their family had strong ties to the armed forces. Unlike her older sister, Lucy followed their father in their father’s footsteps and joined the army. Eventually, she became a member of the JAG Corps. She rose through the ranks, becoming a Major. Though, there was one snag; she didn’t get along with her dad or her sister.
Sam never liked the idea of his daughters dating and came to hate both Clark Kent and James Olsen and considered them as not being good enough for his girls. He was also xenophobic towards aliens. Ultimately, this clashed with the morals of his daughters, who did NOT hate aliens. Lucy did not have a good relationship with Supergirl in the beginning, unaware that she was Kara Danvers with whom she’d become friends.
It was also unclear as to why Lucy and Lois didn’t get along pre-Crisis. However, this could potentially change post-Crisis.
A Bit Of Context On What Could Happen
We don’t know anything about the plot of Superman & Lois Season 2 yet. However, we do know that Nat Irons’ arrival is being touched on during the first episode. Moreover, there is a lot in store for the Kent-Lane family. Lois will be co-running the Smallville Gazette with Chrissy. Meanwhile, Jordan will be exploring his powers and his relationship with Sarah. Elsewhere, Jonathan will become closer to Tegan, whose dad is currently in prison.
However, it’s unclear what Sam and Clark’s roles will be. Though, Clark will struggle with being seen as a potential pariah by Nat. After all, her Earth’s Superman killed her mother.
What we do know, however, is that there’s going to be a new player with Lieutenant Mitch Anderson, who becomes the “new sheriff” of Smallville who hates Superman and wants to keep him metaphorically under his thumb. So, this begs the question of Lucy might come into it. Depending on how many episodes Jenna is slated to appear in, she might be the one who supervises Anderson.
Now, we know in Supergirl there was no mention that she knew Clark was Superman. However, given the timeline changes with Crisis, Lucy will have known her brother-in-law for a long time. Given the twins were born in 2007, he and Lois have been together for most of their adult lives.
At the end of Superman & Lois Season 1, Sam retired from duty to spend time with his grandsons. So, let’s say that he needs someone to watch over the D.o.D for him that he trusts. This person could be Lucy if she is written to still be in the army. It would also bring her closer to her family including her nephews, though could the conflict between her and sister still be there?
Lucy’s Return Could Mean Several Things
There is a million reasons why Lucy could be returning to Super lore. We assume her personality will differ due to Crisis. Moreover, this may mean she knows who Superman truly is.
Before we start, we need to stress that these are just THEORIES. We have no ties to production.
- After learning that Sam has stepped down from active duty, Lucy arrives in Smallville to take control of the D.o.D and keep Mitch Anderson in check.
- Lois reluctantly calls her sister in to help with legal matters when the Smallville Gazette gets into trouble.
- Lucy arrives unannounced at the Kent Farmhouse, which causes conflict with Lois but glee from the twins for getting to see their aunt.
- One of the boys calls Lucy in when they sense something isn’t right with Sam, but they fail to tell their mother, which causes problems.
- Clark calls Lucy in when Sam and Lois start clashing over something that could rip their family apart.
We’re just praying that Lucy has a change of personality. Sam did. He went from hating Superman to being his main ally outside of James and Lois. This is very different to how he was portrayed by a different actor in Supergirl.
