How Superman & Lois Combines Cult Culture With Woke Culture

cult

They say never trust a self-help group. Okay, we’ve never heard anyone say that, but whatever. It might be a cult in disguise, which it might just be. Superman & Lois is edging down a very dark path by having returning character, Lucy Laneenter into a cult which has caused her life to spiral out of control. The situation has caused a crater in her relationship with Lois. We’ve known for a while that she would be coming back.

Lucy follows Ally Allston’s ideologies so much, that as Lois puts it, her sister is a shell of who she once was. As we witness in a flashback at the beginning of the episode, the youngest of the sisters blames Lois for their mother leaving them as kids when she had nothing to do with it.

It’s evident that Lucy envies Lois’ successful life and career and silently wishes she had the same. What makes it painful to watch is how the pain radiates through the rest of the family. While Sam’s thoughts on the matter aren’t touched on, it’s clear at the beginning of the episode that it pains Jonathan and Jordan to see their mother in agony.

During the flashback, Lois says that the boys adore their aunt. That was five years ago. Back in the present, Jordan eavesdrops using his super-hearing when he shouldn’t. His father warns him against it, especially when it involves Lois. Hearing how sad Jonathan sounds when he tells Clark that the podcast is with their Aunt Lucy makes us wonder how close they were.

Being associated with a cult in any way, even indirectly, is dangerous. You can get still get into trouble, as Lois learns when the podcast talks about her work and tries to discredit her and the sources she used.

Vendetta Or Cult Following

Lucy is devout to one belief; the woke way of life. She believes that Ally is right about everything, including that her sister has a personal vendetta and that her journalistic stance is biased. Allston is feeding off Lucy’s insecurities and has so for years. In the comics, Alexandra Allston is a female iteration of the villain, Parasite.

Lois can see what Lucy cannot; Ally is feeding off her need for success and the jealousy she keeps buried. What Lois hasn’t got is a personal vendetta. She has always pulled the punches when she has felt it was necessary. What’s more, is Chrissy should know this by now.

Chrissy’s admiration of Lois went from fangirl level to uncertainty in a flash. She has the belief that her idol has one set of rules for the outside world, but then another for her family. If she considered Lois a friend, she should understand that Lois has her reasons.

Lois hiding Lucy’s involvement with Ally from Chrissy was her way of protecting her sister’s integrity and identity. Also, she [Chrissy] should realise that Lane would not have won all those awards if she was not thorough and unbiased.

As Morgan Edge mentioned during Season 1, once Lois smells a story, there’s no stopping her. It shows how utterly fearless she is. As seen with Ally in this week’s episode, she isn’t one to back down when she is threatened, and she will fight to keep her credibility intact to preserve her family.

Cult v. Woke

Lucy talks a lot about Ally’s truth, which to her, is THE truth. During her confrontation with Lois outside the seminar, she says that Allston isn’t afraid to put THE truth out there, which is code for no one else is right. While this is a classic cult move, if you look at it just a bit closer, it is also a woke move.

Let us explain what we mean by this. In woke culture, those who support political correctness in any form believe you should only have one way of thinking. If you don’t support it, you’re classed as an outsider, and everyone should hate you for not thinking as they do. In recent times, a trend seems to be that if you don’t agree with a high-profile person of colour, you’re deemed a racist.

Please Don’t Push Chrissy To The Dark Side

To end this post, we want to beg the writers NOT to send Chrissy to the dark side! We love her as a character, and while she doesn’t always agree with the way Lois operates, she understands why she is the way she is.

We have our fingers and toes crossed that Chrissy is going undercover to dismantle Ally’s cult from the inside out. Quite honestly, it terrifies us that we’re not going to like the outcome, whatever it might be.
