With Arrow bowing out in a few weeks, Crisis on Infinite Earths has given more context to the growing friendship between Kara and Kate.
The friendship between Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) and Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) has become iconic. Many liken their bromance to being reminiscent of that of Batman and Superman. However, with Arrow ending, a new friendship has begun to take shape.
We’re talking about the unlikely friendship between Batwoman herself, Kate Kane (Ruby Rose) and the Girl of Steel, Kara Zor-El/Danvers (Melissa Benoist).
Going Back To Elseworlds
Kate entered the Arrowverse during the 2018 crossover event, Elseworlds. In this event, we’re given a look at Batwoman and we’re told that Batman has disappeared from Gotham. A new bat has taken his place.
Appearing in the second episode the event, we see Kate in action and reveal a few things about herself. Other than her being gay, she comes to respect Kara and allows herself to let her guard down. The pair find they have a lot in common.
They both have superhero cousins; Batman is Kate’s while Superman is Kara’s and that they’re polar opposites in a sense. Kate is a Bat (dark) with Kara being a Super (light). However unlike their cousins, the two lady heroes respect each other don’t put each other down.
Crisis On Infinite Earths
Crisis on Infinite Earths gives more context to Kara and Kate’s blossoming friendship. When the Monitor sends Batwoman to Earth-99 to find Bruce Wayne (Kevin Conroy), Kara goes with her. What made this such a great move by the writers because it shows how much Kate has grown as a character. Since she became friends with Luke (Camrus Johnson), Kate has learned she needs to ask for help and not go out and do things on her own all the time.
When 99-Bruce reveals himself to be xenophobic towards aliens, Kate doesn’t hesitate to jump in to protect Kara when she is exposed to Kryptonite. It’s this moment sees the pair really shine as it is something their cousins would never do! Supes and Bats had a love-hate relationship. Why would Kara and Kat want to revisit that?
Overshadowed By Famous Cousins
Kara has plenty of experience of being where Kate is currently. She started off at the bottom of the superhero scrap heap because Superman was so famous. Though Clark guided her from afar and helped her become the hero National City needed.
Kate on the other hand still feels like Bruce overshadows her and for good reason. Despite being gone from Gotham, his presence as Batman was well-known and respected. Meanwhile her own transition to become his replacement hasn’t been as smooth as she’d hoped. Much like her cousin, she tends to work alone and doesn’t trust anyone.
As seen in Crisis on Infinite Earths, there’s few people Kate can talk to that won’t tell her she’s wrong. Her reunion with Kara sees her become more comfortable and feels that she can trust her. She tells her friend that her only friend is Luke when they’re on Earth-99 looking for that Earth’s Bruce and end up meeting that a variation of Luke who is very different to one Kate tells Kara about.
Supergirl-Batwoman Crossover Episode?
There’s a rumor floating around that that Supergirl and Batwoman will cross over at some point post-Crisis. Before you all yell and curse, we know Kara and Kate have technically crossed over in Crisis on Infinite Earths, we actually talking about just their two shows. Remember when Arrow and The Flash use to cross over before annual events became a huge deal? That’s what we’re talking about. Let’s not forget that Supergirl has crossed over with The Flash too.
We’re not sure if this actually true but we should know more when the shows come back after Crisis on Infinite Earths. Fingers and toes have been crossed!
