If there is one thing that the pandemic gave a massive boost to, it is online book clubs. It gave people a sense of belonging while we were all locked in our homes. According to the World Economic Forum, book sales were up during 2021, which was as the pandemic was starting to slow.
Over the next few posts, we’ll explore the different aspects of book clubs, beginning with online book clubs. Now, we’ll be looking at the different aspects of book clubs. In the next post, we’ll be covering local book clubs.
A Large Collection Of Online Book Clubs
Online Book Clubs
The first of our online book clubs isn’t actually a single book club. It is a website catered to primarily American readers, that has a massive collection of online book clubs.
Ladies Lit Squad
Based in the UK, Ladies Lit Squad is an online book club that caters specifically to women and women of colour. Some of their top reads of 2022 included Plot, Night Crawling and Stone Blind.
Goodreads Choice Awards Book Club
Held on the book social media platform Goodreads, the Goodreads Choice Awards Book Club reads the books that are included in their annual choice awards, which are held at the end of the year.
Lez Book Club
Focused on the LGBT community in London, this group was (when we were researching) online. However, according to their Instagram account, they’re in person only now.
OKHA
OKHA is a book readers group for people of colour in the LBGT community. They focus on authors of African, Caribbean & Afro-Latinx descent.
Better Read Than Dead Book Club
Established in 1996, Better Read Than Dead shares its name with a bookshop in Newtown New South Wales where they discuss books from all different genres. There are several book clubs that are run.
FW x Hachette Book Club
FW x Hachette is run by book publisher Hachette Australia online by Jamila Rizvi and Astrid Edwards. The goal of the group is dissect and discuss the book that is the topic of conversation.

This website gives massive discounts and has been running for over 10 years.
Tough Guy Book Club
Tough Guy Book Club was founded in 2012 and is part of a network of book lovers that occurs at the pub. It started in Collingwood in Victoria. It now has a number of chapters throughout Australia and New Zealand.
hoopla Digital Book Club
We couldn’t find a ton of information on this one, but hoopla appears to be an online book club that focuses on digital comics, ebooks, audiobooks and graphic novels.
Rachael Johns’ Online Book Club
Author Rachael Johns runs an online book club and in-person meet ups. She also posts a yearly book list on her website.
