Meet The Director, Writer And Star Of The Upcoming Blue Beetle! And Some Chat About The Costume

Blue Beetle

We got a big surprise at DC FanDome though, we don’t recall the announcement being made that Blue Beetle is making his live-action debut in his own solo adventure. Kat Bailey of IGN reports that the suit design was made public for the first time. However, at the panel, the Latino actor who will be playing Jaime Reyes, Xolo Maridueña said that the suit hadn’t been created yet.

The panel also introduced us to the director Angel Manuel Soto and writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer.

Blue Beetle will be the first superhero film to be led by a Mexican actor. Jaime Reyes is the third person in DC Comics to become Blue Beetle behind Dan Garrett and Ted Kord.

Blue Beetle is the first film to feature a version of the character, but it is not the first time the character has appeared or been referenced in live-action. Jaime Reyes appeared in the final season of the Superman origin series Smallville during the episode “Booster“. However, the character is never referred to as “Blue Beetle”. This episode also featured Booster Gold.

Also, Ted Kord was supposed to appear in Arrow Season Three as there were plans for him, but only his business Kord Industries is referenced during Seasons Two and Four. An Earth-Prime version is included in Star City post-Crisis. Blue Beetle overall was referenced in Season 1 Episode 7 of Legends of Tomorrow.

Jaime appears in Young Justice from Season Two onward as a member of the titular team.

Costume… Yay Or Nay?

The costume, according to the concept art, looks pretty comic accurate. Moreover, this is a good thing as to create a costume like this would be costly. Given the nature of the scarab fused to Jaime’s back, it would not surprise anyone if the suit is entirely CGI like Pierce Brosnan’s will be in Black Adam.

Finally, the film currently hasn’t started to film yet, and there’s no release date currently. Hopefully, we’ll know more as time goes on. In conclusion, the film will heavily centre on Jaime’s family values.
