Despite Gellert Grindelwald’s limited appearance in both screen franchises, it is surprising how many actors have played him. There are five actors representing four nationalities.
The Actors Who Have Played Gellert Grindelwald In The Harry Potter Films
Let’s begin with the Potter films. Two actors played the dark wizard in the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows two-parter.
- Jamie Campbell Bower is British and played Gellert Grindelwald in the Deathly Hallows and the Fantastic Beasts films, making him the only actor of the five to appear as the same character in a Potter and Fantastic Beasts film.
- Michael Byrne is also British and appeared in the Death Hallows films as an older Grindelwald.
The Grindelwald Actors Who Appeared In Fantastic Beasts
The Fantastic Beasts films had three actors for the same character. We’re not including Campbell Bower here, as we’ve already mentioned him.
- Colin Firth is Irish and appeared as Percival Graves, an auror whom Grindelwald was masquerading as for most Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
- Johnny Depp is American and played Gellert Grindelwald in two Fantastic Beasts films of three, first appearing after Percival Graves is revealed to be an imposter.
- Mads Mikkelsen is Danish and replaced Depp after being forced to step down during the court case involving his ex-wife, Amber Heard. Mikkelsen was a fan favourite to play the role before and after Depp.
