What We Know (So Far) About The Live-Action Reboot Of How To Train Your Dragon

How to Train your Dragon

“Thank you for nothing, you useless reptile.” Ah. Classic Hiccup. How To Train Your Dragon is returning to the big screen in a couple of years as it will receive the live-action treatment like so many other films. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information on the project, but there is enough for us to run down what we know.

So, grab that raw cod (that’s a dragon joke, FYI), and let’s jump in.

How To Train Your Dragon Production

According to an article published by Collider in February 2023, the film Dreamworks and Universal Pictures will produce, the same companies that released the animated trilogy, has a release date of March 14 2025. This date comes before the 15th anniversary of the original film, which was released on March 25 2010. However, dates do change.

Dean Deblois, the lead director of the original films, will direct the movie. He will also be directing and writing the screenplay, so expect big things. The original 2010 film was co-directed by Chris Sanders (alongside DeBlois), who later produced the two sequels.

Cast (Unconfirmed)

So far, we haven’t got a confirmed cast so far, but there have been talks about who could play three of the leads. The Direct reports the following:

Jack Dylan Grazer (Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods) could play Hiccup, the lead character.

Auli’i Cravalho (Moana) may be our favourite shieldmaiden Astrid, who became Hiccup’s love interest in the first film and later his fiancé and then his wife and the mother of his two children. However, if Auli’l is playing Astrid, this may conflict with her role in the upcoming live-action remake of Moana, in which she is believed to be reprising her part from the animated film due out around the same time. However, this might be a breakout role for her in the live-action sphere.

Finally, we have Joel Edgerton (Star Wars), who may portray Stoick the Vast, the chief of Berk and Hiccup’s widowed over-protective dad.

When we have more updates, we’ll issue an update post.
