What happens when three perfect strangers become BFFs over solving the crime of a fellow apartment tenant? Only Murders In The Building is a show we never thought we would watch. We were convinced. The idea of Selena Gomez (Mabel), Steve Martin (Charles), and Martin Short (Oliver) working together was something we never fathomed.

When Tim Kono, a young man living in the Arconia, is found dead, true crime podcast fanatics Charles-Haden Savage, Mabel Mona and Oliver Putnam investigate the case. However, as time goes on, secrets from the trio’s pasts come back in an attempt to bite them.

In this article, we explore what makes Only Murders In The Building so loved.

Charles-Haden Savage. Mabel Mora. Oliver Putnam. These three have zero in common, or so they thought. But, after riding together in an elevator, the three realise they share a love of true crime podcasts. The perfect strangers become heavily rooted in each other’s lives after the death of Tim Kono.

Unbeknownst to Charles and Oliver, Mabel and Tim had a shared history as part of a group they dubbed their version of the Hardy Boys. It was the two of them, plus Oscar and Zoe. Zoe later died after she fell off a roof, and Oscar was charged with her murder.

Mabel Mona is a loner living in her Aunt Salma’s apartment, and she is renovating it for her. She ends up in the lift with Charles and Oliver, who are both in the same vote as she is. She joins them for dinner when the building is evacuated, where they talk about their favourite podcast.

Oliver Putnam is a down-his-luck theatre director struggling to keep his apartment. However, when he is told he needs to cough up the money for his rent, he goes to his son, Will, for help. However, will is annoyed that his dad keeps going to him, and he declines to help him again.

Finally, Charles-Haden Savage is an actor who worked in the crime drama Brazzos. He’s a lonely man repeating the same day every day where he cooks the same omelette for his stepdaughter, Lucy, who he hasn’t seen in years.
