Princess Margaret was one of the most stylish royal women of her time, and one of her most iconic go-to tiaras was the Poltimore tiara. According to the UK charity house, Christie’s, the piece was created for Lady Poltimore in 1870 by the famed royal jeweller Gerrard’s.
Lady Poltimore was the wife of the second Baron Poltimore who served as a treasurer in the household of Queen Victoria. But where does Princess Margaret fit into the story? Well, that’s what we’re going to talk about now.
According to Adventurine, Princess Margaret bought the Poltimore Tiara before her wedding to Antony Armstrong-Jones and wore it on their big day. She was walked down the aisle by her brother-in-law, Prince Philip. After that, the princess wore the tiara on multiple occasions, including in a famous photo of her in the bath.
The tiara has designed to have cushion-shaped and diamond cut clusters. These clusters were placed into scroll motifs.
Princess Margaret was also known for wearing the Lotus Flower tiara, which is now worn by Catherine, the Princess of Wales.
What Happened To The Poltimore Tiara?
After her death, Princess Margaret’s children, David Armstrong-Jones and Sarah Chatto were forced to sell the Poltimore Tiara. They also had to do the same with various other pieces of jewellery in 2006. This came four years after their mother’s death in order to cover the inheritance taxes.
The tiara was not owned by the royal family, but Princess Margaret personally. Why the tiara was not willed to the family is unknown. The whereabouts of the Poltimore Tiara now is unknown to the public.
