The former Sophie Rhys-Jones, now the Duchess of Edinburgh, was a favourite of the late Queen due to her loyalty and commitment to the family. However, this was not always the case. The former Countess of Wessex once badmouthed her in-laws and politicians to an undercover journalist. While this royal scandal was nothing like Fergie’s toe-sucking, it was embarrassing for the Wessexes.
In 2001, two years after marrying the Queen and Prince Philip’s youngest son, Prince Edward, the then-Earl of Wessex, Sophie was caught on audio badmouthing British Prime Minister Tony Blair, whom, according to the Countess of Wessex, as she was known at the time, the royals didn’t like him as he was “too Presidential.” Ouch! She also said they didn’t like his wife, Cherie. This is according to Richard Eden, Diary Editor at the Daily Mail.
The Blairs weren’t the only political figures that Sophie criticised. She also made remarks about William Hague, who was the Opposition Leader at the time.
Sophie’s Questionable Comments About Charles And Camilla
But wait, that’s not all. The future Duchess of Edinburgh also made questionable comments about her brother-in-law, the now King Charles, when he was still Prince of Wales and the now Queen Camilla before they were married. She said that the British people would not take kindly to Mrs Parker Bowles as Camilla was known then, becoming Queen.
Please remember that about five years had passed since Princess Diana died after she perished in a Parisian car crash in late August 1997. The public was still iffy about Charles and Camilla, and the then-Prince of Wales’ reputation was still recovering.
Sophie learned her lesson quickly and never again put a foot wrong again. She has gone on to do some amazing things, like raise awareness for eyecare, especially after her daughter, Lady Louise, had to have corrective surgery.
