When it comes to Grace Augustine and the RDA, they’re like water and oil. There is no in-between. No compromise. The scientist’s worries about the corporation and their monetary greed are enough to make anyone nauseous.
With all that being said, the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water will see the RDA return to Pandora with a vengeance that drives Jake Sully and his family out of their home. The Sully family are forced to migrate to the Metkaykina, a tribe of Na’vi who live in and around the water.
Augustine, in the first film and the head of the RDA, Parker Selfridge, were constantly at each other’s throats. Grace disapproved of the interference, so she moved her team to the Hallelujah Mountains.
Doctor Augustine: Don’t Mess With Grace
Selfridge and Colonel Miles Quaritch are massive thorns in the doc’s side and Jake’s.
Selfridge doesn’t care about the Na’vi and wants the Unobtainium that lurks beneath the Omaticaya’s Hometree and the Tree of Voices. As he tells Grace after she confronts him about Jake’s involvement, A kilogram of Unobtainium is worth $20 million.
The RDA Overstep
Grace’s primary concern is the Omaticaya and the war that would break out if the RDA overstepped. Again, Selfridge tells Augustine that relations with the Na’vi are getting worse. She fires back and says it’s bound to happen when they’re being fired at with machine guns. The situation becomes more complicated when Jake falls in love and mates with Neytiri, the princess of the Omaticaya clan.
The news sweeps through the Omaticaya quicker than Jake and Neytiri can stop it because the morning after, the RDA bulldoze the Tree of Voices while Sully’s consciousness is back in his human body. When he reconnects to the body, they hurry back to Hometree, but it’s too late. The news has spread of the couple’s mating, much to the devastation of Tsu’tey, the male that Neytiri was supposed to mate with and who was betrothed to her late sister, Slywanin, before her death years earlier.
Jake tries to explain what’s happening, but he and Grace have their links severed, returning them to their human bodies. Jake explodes at Quaritch for cutting the ties and is sucker punched and rendered unconscious. At Hometree, Tsu’tey attempts to harm Jake’s Avatar, but Neytiri defends it.
Prison Break
Grace, Jake and Norm are arrested and chucked into a prison cell for treason against the RDA. Max and Trudy then proceed to break them out. Furthermore, Jake’s relationship with Neytiri has also gotten back to Quaritch, who mocks him.
Jake makes it clear to Quaritch and Selfridge that if they want their people to survive, they need to start listening to Augustine when she tells them to respect the Na’vi’s home. Selfridge laughs at her, saying that the trees are just that. Grace gords Quaritch by questioning what he will do if she doesn’t remain quiet. What’s interesting about this scene is that she baits him by prophesying her demise at his hand. She says he’ll have to shoot her, and he does when she and her team escape.
The RDA bought about their downfall as the Na’vi bought them down. Neytiri kills Quaritch in retaliation for causing Jake’s human body to almost suffocate. She also avenges Grace’s death as Quaritch, as we mentioned, is responsible for killing her. Many of the humans associated with the RDA are sent back to Earth. Those who aided in the fight against the RDA were allowed to stay, meaning Norm and Max remained on the planet.
We know Norm stayed because he is present at the ceremony presenting Neteyam, Jake and Neytiri’s eldest son, to the Omaticaya as the heir. It is unknown what is going on with Max.
Going back to Augustine, her main concern what that the RDA would ignore her pleading. She was correct. Moving her team to the mountains was a smart move. However, Grace didn’t count on Jake’s actions starting the war but also saved countless lives.
