Cats In Harry Potter

Cats Harry Potter

Cats pop up all over the Harry Potter franchise. From Animagus to magic breeds, let’s explore these critters. There are a few avenues we go down in this post due to how frequently felines appear.

Please note we will be exploring not just the cats but characters who could transfigure themselves into cats.

Animagus

A couple of Harry Potter characters can transfigure themselves into cats. These include:

  • Minerva McGonagall (registered)
  • Unnamed registered magical person

Patronus

  • Minerva McGonagall
  • Dolores Umbridge

Pure Breed Cats

  • Mrs Norris – Owned by Argus Filch
  • Fuzzclaw – Owned by Rowan Khanna – Hogwarts Mystery game

As noted in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, normal cats can petrified by the Basilisk. However, it is likely that every type of animal can be petrified.

Part Kneaze

  • Crookshanks – owned by Hermione Granger
  • Mr Tibbles
  • Mr Paws
  • Tufty
  • Snowy

Arabella Figg was a breeder of half-kneazles. The half-kneazles mentioned above, except Crookshanks, belonged to Mrs Figg.

There is also a fan theory that Crookshanks was the cat mentioned by Lily Potter in her letter to Sirius Black. However, it has not been confirmed.

Unspecified Cats in Harry Potter

  • The Potter family cat – mentioned by Lily Potter in a letter to Sirius Black
  • Millicent Bullstrode’s cat – Hermione mentions the cat when she reveals the hair she had put in the Polyjuice Potion she had taken had been cat hair, not human hair
  • Madam Rosemerta’s cat
  • Sybill Trelawney’s cat
  • Tertius’s brothers’ cat
  • Jacob’s sibling’s cat (selectable in Hogwarts Mystery)
  • Cat belonging to Aberforth Dumbledore
  • Feline owned by Constance Pickering
