What Is The Darksaber In Star Wars?

Darksaber, Star Wars

The Darksaber is almost as iconic as its lightsaber counterpart in Star Wars. Created by the Mandalorian Jedi Tarre Vizsla, the Darksaber is a black-bladed lightsaber that would become the symbol of the Mandalorian people over a thousand years after the weapon’s construction.

We’re including the Darksaber in our Ahsoka coverage due to its connection with Sabine Wren. The Mandalorian rebel trained in lightsaber combat with her friend, Kanan Jarrus, a former Jedi. This training would become helpful when Ezra Bridger left his green lightsaber with Chopper before he disappeared with Grand Admiral Thrawn.

So, the Darksaber is a symbol of great power for the Mandalorians. For a leader to lead, they need to win the blade in combat. Otherwise, their leadership claim is considered illegitimate. However, there was an exception. Sabine didn’t win the Darksaber in combat. She found it in Darth Maul’s lair on Dathomir, where he kept it as a trophy after he won it before the Siege of Mandalore.

The Darksaber Ends Up In Gideon’s Hands

When Sabine meets Bo-Katan Kryze, the sister of the late Satine Kryze, the younger Mandalorian hands the weapon over unchallenged. However, we catch up with the Darksaber in The Mandalorian Season 1 finale, and it is in the hands of Moff Gideon.

We learn later when Din Djarin tries to return the weapon to Bo, that she lost the Darksaber to Gideon and refuses to take the weapon as she did with Sabine.

Din won the weapon from Gideon during the Season 2 finale. He later attempts to train with it but finds it too heavy. He attempts to return it to her when he meets up with Bo. Unlike Bo, he was not raised like she was and was unfamiliar with the tradition of winning the saber in combat.

We last see the Darksaber before it gets destroyed by Gideon.
