The Directors Of Star Wars

directors, star wars

Star Wars is well-known for its directors. In this post, we will briefly review the franchise directors. Given that there are so many regarding television, we won’t be including animation directors. However, the exception we’re making is the Clone Wars film. In addition, however, we’ll be including only the live-action shows that are complete. So don’t expect to see The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Acolyte or Andor in this list. Also, former directors are omitted as they did not complete the project they were given.

Finally, we’ll cover the future directors in the last section of this post.

Film Directors In Star Wars

  • George Lucas: I, II, III, IV
  • Irvin Kershner: V
  • Richard Marquand: VI
  • JJ Abrams: VII, IX
  • Rian Johnson: VIII
  • Ron Howard: Solo
  • Gareth Edwards: Rogue One
  • Dave Filoni: The Clone War Movie

  • Steph Green: 1 episode.
  • Kevin Tancharoen: 1 episode.

The Future Of Star Wars Film Directors

The future of Star Wars film directors will be much different from what we’ve seen before. If we’re lucky, we’ll get two films, Rogue Squadron* and a currently untitled film directed by women. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins will direct Rogue Squadron, and Ms Marvel television director, Sharmeen-Obaid-Chinoy, will direct the untitled film.

Shawn Levy will reportedly also be directing a film, as well will Taika Watiti, who directed an episode of the series, The Mandalorian while also playing IG-11.

*Rogue Squadron is reportedly cancelled
