The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ronin-verse is back! After the success of The Last Ronin mini-comic series, a whole universe has formed around this new TMNT continuity. It seems that 2023 will be THE year of the turtle with the upcoming release of the first CGI cinematic Turtles film since 2007’s TMNT in the form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which is due out in August. Hopefully, Nickoleondeon realises how popular the Rise of the TMNT movie was on Netflix and gives us another movie. Anyway, let’s move on to Casey Marie and her mother, April, as they navigate raising the next generation of turtles.
We don’t get a lot of Casey Marie and the turtles in the first issue, but we do find out the genders and names of the new turtles. We’ll go over this in another post later in more detail, but we have two girls and two boys in this new lineup. It’s unclear of the age order. With the original turtles, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird had left it ambiguous as to which was the oldest. However, countless films and television shows had Leonardo as the eldest much of the time, followed by Raphael, Donatello and then Michelangelo as the youngest. The only time we’ve seen a switch is in Rise of the TMNT, where Raph is the eldest and Leo is the second oldest.
The names of the new turtles are Moja, Odyn, Uno, and Yi. Moja and Yi are the girls, while Odyn and Uno are the boys. They are all so adorable. Little Yi looks like she could be the Donatello of the group. Meanwhile, The Old Turtle Den said in a video that there could be a power struggle between Moja and Uno. Again, it’s to place which turtle in the place of their predecessors. Furthermore, we’ll go over this in more detail in another post.
Poor Casey Marie. She believes she is over her head in being the mother and sensei of the new turtles. Voicing her concerns to her mother, she tells April that she is trying to honour what came before and what Mikey would’ve wanted.
April tells her daughter that she remembers a lesson from Donatello, who taught her the scientific method. She also explains to Casey Marie that she wasn’t always sure she could be an excellent mother to her. But she remembers what her friends taught her and allowed that to be a basis for being a parent.
The little turtles are a handful, a lesson that Casey Marie quickly learns. She understands what Splinter went through when his sons were little. Moja, Oryn, Uno and Yi refer to April as “Gramma” or Granny April”, which is adorable.
