Altered Headlines: The Deceit Of The Oprah Interview And New Revelation

headlines

In just over three weeks, it will be exactly a year since the Oprah interview went to air. For those of you who might have forgotten, the UK media came under fire for what Winfrey dubbed “racist headlines.” However, we spotted something not many people caught at the time. One of the headlines that were used was from an Australian outlet. What takes the cake is most of the headlines used weren’t from UK publications. Many of them were from the US but passed over as being British.

Rory Tingle of the MailOnline did a whole article on the headlines when the interview dropped. As he rightly points out, another magazine cover was from the United States, Meghan’s home country, in which she claimed Tom Bradby in South Africa that there were no tabloids in America. Anyone who doesn’t live under a rock will know there are gossip magazines in every country. Not to mention, the US is notorious for them.

What Oprah Thought Would Happen

Oprah thought she was on the money, that she would score another Emmy for her work. After all, her BFF, Gayle King, said the Sussex Interview was the best one Winfrey had done. However, that’s not what the public thought. Every claim was fact-checked and debunked as untrue.

Since the former talk show host was friends with the Sussexes, she thought she was helping them. Instead, the altered headlines made the public hate them more. However, there was one upside to the interview; it got people talking. Not to mention, it also prompted a backlash against the royals. It would come out that almost everything Markle and Harry said was nothing more than degrading lies.

Ultimately, the public woke up, and the tide turned back to the royals. The drama only lasted a day or two before the media were throwing the mistruths back in Harry, Meghan, and Oprah’s faces. Then, in shock horror, Winfrey started removing the interview from the internet with only a few small traces remaining. This is when the stories started to come out that she had cut ties with the couple. A video later came out on Twitter of Oprah saying no one should be questioning Harry and Meghan’s “truth.” However, it is unclear when this video was filmed. It could’ve been after the interview before it blew up in their faces.

The New Revelation

To end this post, we thought we’d cover something that happened the other day on Twitter. We were scrolling through our feed when we found a tweet from Evans Einstein regarding an old article from around the time Harry and Meghan were dating. The article was posted by the Daily Mail regarding Meghan and her mother, Doria being “almost outta Compton.” What people missed is what was written in the byline of the article.

The article was written by two AMERICAN journalists. Furthermore, the byline says one was writing from Los Angeles and the other from Long Island, New York. One or both of these journalists are people of colour. So, why would two Americans be writing a slanted article on a biracial woman and her black mother when they’re people of colour themselves? Unclear.

For those who might not be aware, the Daily Mail was founded in the UK by has a couple of other outlets in different countries. One of those is in the US. Another is in Australia. So, this begs the question. Why was the UK edition was called out for something the US publication published?

It all falls under the same umbrella. Moreover, it’s the same with Refinery29 and other publications which have international editions. However, not all of these outlets are owned by the same company. For example, Refinery29 in the US is a part of Vice Media. Meanwhile, the Australian edition part of Pedestrian.

In conclusion, the origin of the newspaper takes precedence over the facts hence why the UK Daily Mail was blamed and not the US edition.
