They’re back, y’all they’ve bought back some new friends! The Proud Family is back in the new Disney+ series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder. The series is nostalgic for old fans with a modernised twist that shows from the beginning of the first episode. There is so much to unpack in this post so, let’s jump in!
Same, But With A Few Proud Changes
Our first point is the Proud family themselves look relevantly the same as the original series with a few updates.
One of the biggest updates is BeBe and CeCe, Penny’s twin siblings. As you can probably tell, CeeCee (the girl twin) was entirely redesigned while BeeBee looks almost the same.
Trudy and Oscar don’t look different that much and neither does Suga Mama, except her dress is white and not pink.
Also, Bobby, Oscar’s older brother doesn’t have the afro like the original series. Unfortunately, he’s not featured in the original design image.
Penny’s Friends Are Back… Minus Sticky… Let’s Not Forget The Gross Sisters
Penny’s three female best friends are back with Dijonay, Zoe, and LaCienega along with their male friend Michael. Sticky, Dijonay’s main boo is seen in one scene in the first episode. He moves to Japan with his father and is able to escape Dijonay whom he hates.
Even the Gross sisters are back and have ventured off into the music industry instead of jacking people for their money.
Going back to Michael and he’s been entirely redesigned for this new series. He is also gender non-conformist and gay. The only parts of his original appearance that still exists on the new character model is his nose and ears. Moreover, his new perspective differs from the original series were he was interested in LaCienega, as per the Proud Family Fandom.
Michael in this series voiced by EJ Johnson, the son of basketball star, Magic Johnson.
The New Proud Friends
Penny gains some new friends in new girl Maya (Keke Palmer) and her brother, KG (A Boogie) who have moved into Sticky’s new house with their two dads, Barry and Randall an interracial gay couple played by Zachary Quinto and Billy Porter.
Maya doesn’t like anyone, as KG reveals to Penny when she questions why his sister doesn’t like her. However, by the time of the second episode, they’re relatively civil. Though, this might change as the season progresses. Since Sticky is no longer on the scene, Dijonay is now high strung on KG.
Themes
Unlike the original series, the new Proud Family focuses on topics they would never have been able to talk about on the original series. One of those is same sex families and partnerships. Other topics include:
- Social Media Influencers and what happens when fame goes to your head.
- Overbearing parents.
- LGBTQ.
- Body Changes.
- Relationships.
