After months of tensions for the royal family, they are now mourning the loss of one of their own. Prince Philip, the husband of Her Majesty The Queen of over 70 years, has died aged 99 just a couple of months shy of his 100th birthday. The news was announced via The Royal Family’s Instagram account and on their Twitter account:
The Duke of Edinburgh’s passing comes just a few weeks after he returned home after spending a month in hospital fighting an infection and undergoing heart surgery.
As the world mourns Prince Philip, we are keeping the British royal family in our thoughts as they grieve.
Scott Morrison, the Australian Prime Minister has announced that the flags will fly at half-mast, according to 9News.
Prince Philip and The Queen’s courtship dates back to 1939 when the then-Princess Elizabeth was 13 years of age. The couple married in 1947, according to Pedestrian.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s death allows for the activation of Operation Forth Bridge, as per The Sydney Morning Herald which was the order put in place for a period of mourning that allows ‘minimal fuss’ as Prince Philip would’ve wanted it. He also wanted a military funeral to be held at Saint George’s Chapel and to be buried in Frogmore Gardens.
Prince Philip is survived by his wife, Her Majesty The Queen, their four children Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward along with their eight grandchildren:
