OPINION – We Should Be Educating Each Other On Culture, Not Being Told We’re Racist

As a white woman, I cannot understand how a person of colour would feel after being allegedly “interrogating” by a caucasian 83-year-old woman, born at a different time. I’m 29, and have been around people from all ethnicities my entire life. My best friend as a child was a child of colour. If you don’t believe me, you can ask my mother. I loved seeing parts of her culture whenever I was at her house. Her parents were always welcoming to my family and me.

I cherish those times. Culture should be embraced. It’s sad that people, regardless of age, feel the need to get offended nowadays. Call me old-fashioned, but what happened to get to know people and their backgrounds? I’ve said here on Project Fangirl that Meghan Markle is to blame for making non-racist issues a problem. As I stated in yesterday’s post about the drama surrounding Lady Susan Hussey and Ngozi Fulani, there are people out there who are not educated.

Meghan did the world a great disservice by blasting her narcissism to Oprah. Almost all the claims she, and by extension, Prince Harry, were proven to be lies, misconceptions or half-truths. Their truth is more important than facts. Now, I have been blasted for my “not making sense” article yesterday and saying that it’s not journalism. If you don’t like what I wrote, please do not read it. It’s that simple.

More On The Lady Hussey/Fulani Situation

I failed to mention yesterday that I saw a comment on Twitter, which I believe is spot on, where Ms Fulani’s treatment of Lady Hussey was ageist. Many people now do not have a tolerance for older people. A ton of older people are stuck in their ways. For example, my grandmother used to say “I-talian”, not “E-talian”, despite me telling her countless times that the ‘I’ in “Italian” is pronounced as “E”. She was in her early 80s when she died. That was just the type of person she was. Yes, it was annoying, but I never faulted her for it. Neither did anyone else.

Returning to the racism row, could Lady Susan have phrased her questions better? Yes. Could Ngozi have been more tolerant of her line of questioning? Again, yes. In the space of a week, Queen Camilla’s events have been tainted by racist allegations. There has also been talk about Lady Hussey touching Ms Fulani’s hair, which I didn’t touch on yesterday either as there was so much going on. I personally disagree with her doing this, as she could have just asked Ngozi to move her hair so she could see her name tag. Or, she could have asked for her name.

The Sussex Squaddie

Ngozi, as I said yesterday, is a massive supporter of Meghan. Her tweets show this. Also, when people tweet things, half the time they don’t think about, they can come back to bite them. Hartley Sawyer is a classic example of this. The tweets, which were about the Black Lives Matter movement between 2009 and 2014, were misogynist. He has not worked in the entertainment industry since he was fired from The Flash in 2020.

Twitter is a public forum where you must be careful of what you say. Any comment can be taken out of context. Now, while we have people (like Meghan and Harry) who have secret accounts but claim social media is toxic, the people on the platform make it unhealthy. Social media was not set up to be this way.

From personal experience, I have encountered a ton of lovely people. I’ve also met nasty people. I block those people as I have better things to worry about than the toxicity. It would be interesting to seewhat would happen if people went after the toxic people. Would they cry racism? That they’re bullies who can’t get jobs? Whatever the case, culture shouldn’t be reduced because of a small minority of people. It should be a learning experience. That is how the stories of the past are passed down.

You Cannot Teach People Who Do Not What To Be Educated

Educating people is something the ignorant don’t care for. They will be forever stuck in their ways. These are the woke and impressionable. All they preach is lies and “their truth.” These are the same people who believe conspiracy theories. I’ve read enough conspiracies in my time that would make you laugh. I do not believe in them as I practice facts. So, do I theorise from time to time? Yes. I also do not push my theories as fact. Nor should anyone else.

Moreover, it important that people understand that culture is something we might not always understand. Things might not always make sense when they are spoken aloud. Look at the Lady Hussey situation as one example. Ngozi, whose name is actually Marlene (allegedly), was vague in her answers. Also, thinking back on what I have read over the last 24-hours, it was like Ngozi was insulted that Lady Susan didn’t her ethnicity just by looking at her. Just my two cents. Moreover, this is not as fact.

In conclusion, it annoys me so much that caucasian people are being constantly being called racist, because we don’t “understand black culture.” How are we supposed to learn if we’re not educated by the people calling us racist? We cannot keep tie-toeing around the subject. Furthermore, we need to teach other, not cry racism because the other person didn’t know how to respond.

Finally, I have more to say, but I will cover this more in another post.
