Moff Gideon was a recurring villain on The Mandalorian. Gideon’s death is why actor Giancarlo Esposito did leave the show. Though, this is Star Wars. No one is ever truly gone. Look at how they bought back (kinda) Shmi Skywalker in The Clone Wars series. Gideon is supposed to have died in the Season 3 finale, The Return.
However, given that Gideon, much like the late Emperor Palpatine, had a series of clones made, it is possible that he will return in some capacity.
Whether this will be in the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu movie or another season of The Mandalorian is yet to be seen. There was some speculation that the character was Force Sensitive, a theory we have debunked.
Is Moff Gideon Dead?
To answer the question of whether Moff Gideon did leave The Mandalorian, the answer is we don’t know for sure. He could return in flashbacks or as a clone or resurrected. So to summarise, the episode in which Gideon dies is Chapter 24: The Return and he did not “leave”. He died with the potential of resurrection somewhere down the like like Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker.
Just a little side note: Gideon’s death is similar to Kanan Jarrus’s demise in Star Wars Rebels. However, there is a difference also; Gideon’s death happened because he was selfish and was trying to kill Dinn Djarin, Bo-Katan and Grogu. Kanan’s death was sacrificial as he wanted to ensure his family (the Ghost Crew, which included his then-pregnant partner, Hera), were safe.
