The Batgirl Movie Finally Finds Directors!

Batgirl

After half a decade in development hell, Batgirl has finally found its directors!

A proper version of the Barbara Gordon of Batgirl is finally getting her film. While we’ve known this for a while, the project ended up in development hell after the original director, Joss Whedon, dropped out. This was back in 2018, according to Deadline at the time. The movie was announced in 2017 as per Variety.

Now, the Batgirl movie has been given a new lease on life. The directors of Bad Boys for Life, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Farrah, as per Deadline, will direct. This is not the directing duo’s first venture in the superhero genre. The pair will direct an episode of the upcoming series, Ms Marvel, as per the MCU Fandom page.

It is unknown what the story will entail. For example, it is unclear whether it will be the origin story of how Barbara becomes Batgirl. Furthermore, the film’s screenplay was written by Christina Hodson, who wrote Bumblebee and Birds of Prey.

The film initially was slated for a cinematic release. But it will now debut on HBO Max and likely Binge for Australians. It is unclear when the movie will enter production or when it will drop. But get ready because we suspect they will start dropping castings soon. So be sure to watch this space.

The final point we wanted to get out there is that the Batgirl film is believed to be a standalone. It will NOT be part of the larger DCEU if reports are any indication. So do we expect to see J.K. Simmons back at Barbara’s dad, Commissioner Jim Gordon? We don’t think so. Nor do we expect to see Jeffrey Wright from Matt Reeve’s The Batman.

Editor’s Note: It has been revealed that JK Simmons will reprise his role as Babs’ father, Commissioner Jim Gordon.
