Daenerys Targaryen might be the Mother of Dragons in Game of Thrones, but did you know she was married during the show’s first season? Her husband was Khal Drogo, a Dothraki warlord. He had no issues with murdering people and raping women as he did with his wife.
Drogo’s name was taken from the name of Daenerys’ dragon, Dorgon, who happened to be the last living dragon. His title, Khal, is the male form of Khaleesi. Drogo and Daenerys’ marriage was arranged by Dany’s brother, Prince Viserys and Illyrio Mopatis.
This post covers the Game of Thrones series with a brief reference to House of the Dragon. Nothing from the books is mentioned in this article.
The Culture Barrier
Khal Drogo was a fierce warrior known to be vicious to anyone not of Dothraki ilk. There is no word for thank you in his culture, and on his wedding g night with Daenarys, his favourite word appeared to be “no,” much to his wife’s annoyance. Moreover, he demands they consummate the marriage. Daenerys finds it scary and uncomfortable because of his roughness.
o please him, Daenerys learned the Dothraki language, and with the assistance of her handmaiden, Dany learned how to please her husband in bed. After two months of work, the pair are much happier, so the Khaleesi reveals she’s pregnant with their son.
Khal Drogo Displays How Vicious He Can Be
Khal Drago becomes pleased when it is announced by a prophecy that his son will be “the sta ion who mounts the world.” He also makes it known that he approves of Daenerys naming their child “Rhaego,” after her deceased eldest brother. However, Viserys, Dany’s only surviving brother, becomes aggressive during the celebrations. Drogo mocks and then kills him, unknowingly ending the male Targaryen line by pouring g a cauldron of molten gold over Viserys’ head.
Drogo would later become a vegetable after he gets into a fight and his wound becomes infected. Around this time, Daenerys gives birth to Rhaego, who is stillborn and deformed with leathery dragon wings and grave worms in his belly.
Dany then has no choice but to put him out of his misery by smothering him.
Reference To The Stillbirth of Princess Visenya Targaryen, Daughter Of Rhaenyra And Daemon
Just a side note here. A similar fate befell Visenya Targaryen, the daughter that would have been born to Daenerys’ ancestors Rhaenyra Targaryen and her uncle-husband Daemon. However, the situation surrounding the stillbirth is different.
Visenya, named after one of Aegon the Conqueror’s sister-wives, was born after her mother was told of her father, King Viserys I’s death. Upon feeling her labour pains, this greatly worried her maids, who said the child was coming too soon.
Rhaenyra delivered the child herself by pulling her from her womb to find her small, deformed and deceased. This internally destroyed her. Unfortunately, her pain didn’t lessen as her son Lucerys Velaryon would be accidentally killed by her half-brother, Aemond when he lost control of his dragon Vhagar, who attacked Arrax and ate the future Lord of Driftmark.
