Who Was Ariana Dumbledore?

Ariana Dumbledore was the younger sister of Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore and the youngest child of Kendra and Percival Dumbledore. Ariana was exceptionally close to Aberforth, who could calm her temper.

At a young age, Ariana was attacked by a group of Muggle boys after they saw her performing magic. Percival attacked the boys and ended up being sent to Azkaban and serving a life sentence.

Due to the attack, Ariana suppressed her magic, causing an Obscurial to grow within her. In a fit of rage, she accidentally killed her mother, Kendra. Aberforth did not blame her, knowing it was an accident.

Ariana was accidentally killed in a duel between her brothers and Gellert Grindelwald. She attempted to stop it but was caught in the crossfire. It is unclear whose spell hit Ariana, causing her death. In the aftermath of the duel, Albus’ boggart would be his sister’s corpse. Aberforth, meanwhile, would have a portrait handing in the Hogs Head pub, concealing the passage to the Room of Requirement at Hogwarts.

Interestingly, Ariana Dumbledore was not the only Obscurial in her family. Her nephew, Credence Barebone (born Aurelius Dumbledore), also had one due to his mistreatment under the care of Mary Lou Barebone.

Finally and according to Newt Scamander, people with an Obscurial usually don’t live past 10 years of age. However, Ariana and Credence both did. Ariana was 14 when she died, and Credence was an adult.
