Our First Look At Naomi

Naomi

Welcome to the DC multiverse, Naomi! DC FanDome provided audiences with the first look at Ava Duvernay’s The CW series, Naomi, due for release in 2022. The series will focus on Naomi McDuffie, a new character in DC Comics, as she starts her superhero journey. The character, known by the alias Powerhouse, made her comic book debut in 2019 and was co-created by famed comic writer Brian Michael Bendis. In her short tenure, she has been affiliated with Young Justice and the Justice League.

Our first look also contained a special conversation between actresses Candice Patton and actress Kaci Walfall who will be playing Naomi.

Just a side note, Candice did all the news flashes throughout the event, putting her experience of playing a journalist to good use. Here’s a look at Naomi as seen on the SpoilerTV YouTube channel.

Kaci told Candice during their chat that Naomi is a teenager like she herself is. Also, she said that the series draws on family and that there is room for the character to grow on screen.

Note that Naomi is not associated with the Arrowverse as it is not a Berlanti production. However, we do need to mention that Superman plays a small part in the series. Though, don’t expect to see Tyler Hoechlin pop up any time soon.

We mention this is because, in the comics, McDuffie is a diehard Superman fan. She apparently runs a Superman blog, similar to how Iris ran a blog, which became The Central City Citizen in Season 1 of The Flash.

What Makes Naomi A Unique Series

While we don’t know too much about the series yet, it can be said that Naomi is incredibly special. The show will be diverse with our lead heroine being a black girl who is raised by white adoptive parents. Also, she will be an LBGTQ character as her love interest will be female.

Similar to Stargirl, Naomi will be told from the perspective of a teenage superhero who has to jump hurdles to be taken seriously. However, unlike Courtney, Naomi doesn’t have a super team behind her in the series. Our favourite little star has the Justice Society.

Finally, like Kaci told Candice, there’s not a lot of content for the series to follow. Depending on how well the series goes, there is every chance that there will be a load of original storylines. There’s only so much that can be done with the stories already published.
