Turner And Hooch: How The New Television Series Shows What It Means To Be A Dog Owner

Hooch

The slobbery mess that is Hooch is back (kinda) in the new legacy series, Turner and Hooch…

[CAUTION: This post contains spoilers for Turner and Hooch episode 1]

When you’re a dog owner, you very quickly come to see what their personalities are and how to maintain them. Well, the new legacy Disney+ series, Turner and Hooch explores this very concept. Josh Peck takes on the role of Scott Turner Jr, the son of Tom Hanks’ character from the film. Known to his family as ‘Scotty’, Turner is a tidy, by-the-book US Marshal who doesn’t have much time for anything outside of his job. However, when his sister, Laura, and nephew Matthew show up at his house with a slobbery dog named Hooch, his life instantly changes.

Scott learns very quickly that Hooch is more than just a destructive, slobbery, dumb animal. The dog ends up saving his and Marshal partner, Jessica’s butts after they are thrown off their latest case. Hooch ends up saving the day just like Scott Snr said he would in his letter to his son, written prior to his death.

Hooch in this series is just like the original. Slobbery but affectionate and smart. Though, he doesn’t listen to Scott’s rules. He was able to get Scott away from an explosion and was able to detect that the FBI agent in charge of the case was dirty.

What’s more, is Scott’s reluctance to have Hooch at all, shows him as a regular human being who isn’t trying to be spiteful. However, having a dog helps him in a way. He becomes close to a friend of Jessica’s named Erica who trains dogs for the Marshals who unbeknownst to him, has a massive crush on him.

Jessica Thinks Scott Is A Little Crazy At First

When Scott realises Hooch is onto something, he takes him to Jess’ house and tells her what he knows. At first, she’s skeptical but knows him too well to know he wouldn’t be at her front door unless there was a reason. Despite being very pregnant, she follows him to a warehouse where they find the FBI agent Hooch had sniffed out was in fact, dirty.

This results in a shootout where Scott covers for Hooch who really wants to take a bite out of the FBI agent. The next day, the trio are rounded up by their boss who tells them that despite being kicked off the case, they did well. He adds that they will become a canine unit meaning the rowdy dog is also a member of the team.

More To Scott Snr’s Death

As the episode winds to a close, Scott gets a call from Laura about something she and their mother, Emily found odd. She explains that they found a box of old police files in Scott Snr’s wardrobe. Scott says it’s not odd as their father was a detective. Laura says she thinks there’s more to it and that their dad was too scared to tell anyone. This makes us wonder if his death was more than a simple heart attack.

Hoochin’ Up The Right Tree

The series does an amazing job at setting up a reluctant dog owner to find his forever dog which happens fairly quickly. It shows that you shouldn’t judge a dog on how they look or how they act. It is the size of their heart that truly matters.
