With the passing of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke Of Edinburgh we look back at his life as a family man…
To the world, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was a lot of different things but to his family, he was their patriarch. Having married a young Princess Elizabeth in 1947, he became the father of four children, Charles, Anne, Andrew, and Edward. Later in life, he became the grandfather of eight grandchildren and great-grandfather to ten great-grandchildren with an eleventh he would never get to meet. As the world comes to grips with his death, we look back at family man that was the Queen’s husband.
Many the Duke of Edinburgh’s male descendants would be named after him. These include:
- Prince Charles – eldest son (has Philip as first middle name)
- James, Viscount Severn – youngest grandson (has Philip as second middle name)
- Prince William – second eldest grandson (has Philip as second middle name)
- August Brooksbank – second youngest great-grandson (has Philip as first middle name)
- Lucas Tindall – youngest great-grandson (has Philip as middle name)
There is possibly more but these were the ones within the immediate royal family.
His Relationship With His Grandchildren
To the Duke of Edinburgh’s grandchildren, he wasn’t their grandmother’s husband. He was simply ‘Grandpa’ as quoted in an Instagram post by his second youngest granddaughter, Princess Eugenie to celebrate his 99th birthday. While it is unclear what kind of relationship he had with his two youngest grandkids, Louise and James, we know from the media that he had special bonds with some of his older ones.
Both Princes William and Harry inherited their grandfather’s love of having a good laugh. He also had a special connection to his middle granddaughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. This would explain why the youngest of the York sisters named her son in honour of her grandfather. Same applies with Zara, the eldest of the Duke of Edinburgh’s granddaughters. She gave her son his great-grandfather’s name as his middle name.
What made Philip so special is that to his grandchildren, he was just that. Their grandfather. They didn’t see him as anything else. Sure, he had his opinions and got himself into trouble for it, but he was simply doing what he did best; be himself around them.
Father Of Four And Husband Of The Queen
Prince Philip couldn’t have been a grandfather without his four children. With The Queen, he had three sons, Charles, Andrew, and Edward and a daughter, Anne. To their eyes, he was just ‘papa’ or whatever else they would call him.
Of all his children, only daughter Anne inherited the Duke of Edinburgh’s no nonsense attitude as has been very documented as of late.
Most of all, the Duke of Edinburgh was the devoted husband and consort to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. For over seventy years, he stood at her side and supported her through everything she has been through during her reign.
