If there is one thing I hate, it’s fake people. After all my Twitter bio says ‘Hater of fake people’. In today’s Babes against Bullshit post, I wanted to address something that happened a few weeks ago with the D’Amelio family. If you don’t know who they are, it’s more than okay. I only knew about one of them until recently. Let’s just say the term ‘first impressions’ takes on a whole knew meaning.
Basically, the youngest D’Amelio, Charli is a massive star on TikTok who has 101 million subscribers on the platform, according to Social Blade. Big.freaking.whoop. There are Instagram stars with more subscribers than her. Anyway, that’s not the point of this post.
The D’Amelio family as a whole are trying to profit off Charli’s success by launching their YouTube channel. Now, this account has existed since May 2019, if Social Blade is to be believed. The reason I wanted to talk about this family is because of the video they posted of their ‘mystery’ dinner guest. I never watched it, but I’ve seen commentators comment on it so I’ve seen it broken down.
Onto The D’Amelio Drama
For those wondering who their ‘mystery’ guest was, it was James Charles who happens to be the only good part of the video. Despite his flaws and the drama he’s gotten himself into, he was respectful and incredibly professional. If anything, he kept the whole thing from falling apart entirely.
So, the basis of the drama is, Charli and her older sister Dixie were being disrespectful to the ‘chef of the night’ Aaron May who is their father Marc’s favourites. The girls were complaining about the food which was some kind of French dish by the looks of it. In the video, they pull faces and pretend to gag and they do it in front of the guy who went out of his way to cook them dinner. One of them even had the nerve to ask for dino nuggets.
Meanwhile, Charli complains she hasn’t gotten to 100 million subscribers in which James Charles (to his credit) jokingly questions if 95million isn’t enough her. Now, to top this whole situation off, the parents didn’t do anything to stop their daughters’ bratty behaviour.
If you want a quick explainer Hannah of the YouTube channel, Smokey Glow has a great video on the subject:
Is The D’Amelio Family Trying To Become The Next Kardashian-Like Family?
Now, we need to address whether the D’Amelio family are trying to become like the Kardashians/Jenner clan. Our guess (and those of commentary YouTube channels) would be yes, they are.
The D’Amelio parents have social media accounts of their own and while there’s nothing wrong with that, they’re exploiting the idea of their daughters, namingly Charli has millions of subscribers. There’s even a rumour floating around that they are shopping themselves around for a reality show. Kardashian much?
Now, the similarities between the D’Amelio family and the Kardashians is quite obvious:
- They both have a family member who got ‘famous’ (Charli on TikTok and Robert Sr as OJ Simpson’s lawyer and Kim’s sex tape with Ray J).
- They’re worth millions of dollars for being ‘famous’ for being ‘famous’.
- They’ve launched themselves over almost every social media platform in existence currently
- Getting into drama which has people talking about them.
What People Did After The Disastrous Video Was Wrong
Now, as much as I hate it when parents use their children to further themselves the way the D’Amelio ‘rents have, the aftermath of this so-called ‘scandal’ was just disgusting.
Like with every single drama that comes out of YouTube, people have their opinions. Right, fine but the comments that the D’Amelio girls got after the video blew up were just scary as hell. Charli and Dixie are quite literally teenagers and thirty somethings were telling them in DMs and comments to go k*** themselves. First off people who troll teens are no goods with no jobs so they entertain themselves by bullying people to make themselves feel better.
Trust me, I’ve been trolled but not to this extent. Charli jumped on Instagram live in tears and she even called out Trisha Paytas who called the D’Amelio clan out for their antics telling her to stop talking about her because she is after all, a sixteen-year-old girl.
According to Hannah (Smokey Glow)’s video, Jeffree Star also got involved to a minor extent. Why, who knows when it had zero to do with him. Not to mention the cat fight James and Trisha go into when he [James] tried to defend Charli. For Paytas to throw shade at him for his own past drama [the bye sister scandal and everything involving Tati Westbrook, Jeffree and Shane Dawson] is not on.
The Main Issue With The D’Amelio Family
Moving away from the aftermath of the D’Amelio drama, we need to actually address the issue here. Here is yet another family who is looking to make it big on social media. The girls are not at all grateful for their massive followings and their parents – as I stated earlier – are attempt to further themselves through their daughters and their success.
Charli and Dixie are sixteen and nineteen. Charli is still a child in the eyes of the law. Mind you, this is not the first time parents have taken advantage of their children’s fame. Look at what happened with Kim Kardashian’s sex tape. This made her and her family mega bucks and they’ve been in the public eye for basically years which feels like forever.
The reason the Kardashians are even famous outside of the sex tape is because the late Robert Kardashian Sr was a lawyer for O.J. Simpson who was accused of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman. Anyway, this post should have zero to do with the KarJenner clan. I just wanted to throw that point in there as an example of parents using their children’s fame to their own advantage.
The way Charli spoke during the video about not having 100 million followers a literal year after she hit 1 million is pretty snobbish and cringey. This shows she has no appreciation for the followers she already has. It’s because of this comment that she lost 500,000 followers within a single day.
If you say or do something that others don’t like, you’re going to lose subscribers.
There Is A Difference Between Social Media Platforms
What a load of influencers don’t realise is that there is a massive difference between all social media platforms. The D’Amelios seem to have fallen for impression that it was all the same. Let’s examine a couple of examples.
The first one we’re going to look at is Charli’s social media accounts.
Her TikTok account has exactly 102million followers. However, there is a massive drop in her YouTube subscriber amount which currently sits at 8.61million. Her Twitter is even less with 4.9million followers.
Just because she’s successful at one, doesn’t mean she’s successful on the others.
Another example of this is Kim Kardashian West. Her Twitter follower count is 67.8million. Meanwhile her Instagram count is 192million subs. So, Kimmy K is more successful on Insta than what she is on Twitter.
The D’Amelio family need to realise that not all social media outlets are the same.
Final Thoughts
To wrap up this BaBS post, I wanted to say that while this whole ‘Dinner with the D’Amelios’ caper could’ve been prevented, I think the blame falls on all four members of the family but if anything, the parents are mostly at fault. Why? They didn’t pull their daughters up on their bad behaviour. It doesn’t matter if Chef Aaron May was a friend of the family. He might not have been offended but there were people who were.
In a nutshell, the parents need to teach their daughters what it means to be grateful for what they have.
