Duchess Satine Kryze is one of the most tragic non-Skywalker figures in Star Wars. Born on Kalevala to Duke Adonai Kryze, Satine was one of possibly three children and is the sister of Bo-Katan and a potential second sibling, the parent of their nephew Korkie. The family were part of House Kryze and Clan Kryze, and Satine was taken to Mandalore when she was young.
Satine was a pacificist, which strained her relationship with her sister. A decade before the Clone Wars, Satine was protected by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi. She and Kenobi fell in love but decided against a relationship. However, the pair reunited during the Clone Wars, much to the amusement of Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan’s former student and best friend, who was secretly married to Senator Padmé Amidala.
Skywalker enjoyed teasing Kenobi to the point it made Obi-Wan rather flustered. The war often bought Satine and Obi-Wan together, and it would also break them apart. When Darth Maul conquered Mandalore, he was still bitter over Obi-Wan slicing him in half on Naboo thirteen years earlier. He killed the Duchess before Kenobi to get his revenge, and she died in Obi-Wan’s arms.
Maul Kills Satine
However, the Sith Lord still wasn’t satisfied as even years later, he would find Obi-Wan on Tatooine and tried… again to kill him, but was finally killed himself. But that’s a story for another day.
Years later, Mandalorian cadet Sabine Wren of Clan Wren would create an Arc Pulse Generator that destroys Beskar, nicknamed “the Duchess” after Satine. When Bo-Katan learned of the weapon’s name, she questioned Wren, who said it was “a series of bad decisions.”
