Jenna Ray is a teenage girl who is not interested in a relationship. She’s seventeen and just wants to get on with her life after being saved from a fire at the local cinema. Her saviour is the new hero, Blaze and to the public, his first save is his new love.
Oh, and there is a prophecy about Jenna’s coastal home town of Nine Trees in Britain.
Jenna, who is raised by her father and her sister Megan, who despises superheroes, sees through the HPA. She knows how they use the women saved by previous heroes as a form of positive PR. Blaze is a hot guy, but superheroes are a big turnoff.
Jenna comes up with a plan to defy the HPA, but there’s a hurdle. She learns the truth about her mother, whom she hasn’t seen for a decade. So, she needs to get close to Blaze to find out what the organisation is up to so that she can rescue her mum.
Verdict On The Love Interest
This is a fascinating take on the superhero genre, especially since it is a Young Adult book. The lead female character is African-British, from what we can tell from the cover, while the lead male character is of Asian descent (we think, judging by the cover).
The Love Interest is also Helen Comerford’s first novel, which is awesome!
We loved this story so much as it broke every superhero trope in the book. The world knows that supers exist and that they have a codename and a civilian name.
The story also looks at power and how it can be used to force people into agreeing with something they don’t agree with. The Love Interest is also diverse, as Mia, the driver and stylist for Jenna throughout the book, is non-binary. This is the first book I’ve ever read to feature a non-binary person. Nice touch.
