Stargirl: Is Courtney A Potential Anchor For Cameron?

It was the moment we’d been waiting for since Season One. The Camney kiss FINALLY happened and most romantically and beautifully possible. Dedicated Stargirl fans have known a romance was brewing since the first meeting between Cameron and Courtney in ‘Icicle’. In other words? It has been the world’s longest slow burn. While it was deeply satisfying, we have to ask where the relationship goes from here. Well, Courtney may end up being Cameron’s anchor regarding his powers.

We’ve known since Season One that Cameron’s cryokinesis would kick in eventually. We got a tease of his ice breath in ‘The Justice Society.’ But, as has become more difficult for him. His hands have started to cramp, preventing him from being able to paint. Since he completed his mural of his dad, he hasn’t been able to do anything else. He started avoiding Courtney and had outbursts in the middle of class, which was out of character. His teachers have all started to notice the change in his behaviour.

The constant cold shoulders from Cameron have not deterred Courtney in the slightest. If anything, it encouraged her to help him, even if it harmed her. She is brave to stand up for what she believes in, even if she has to fake that she knows nothing about Jordan’s death or the powers Cameron now possesses.

On Cameron’s part, his avoidance of Courtney has opened him up to vulnerability. He fears people will get hurt. His grandparents know this and exploit it by taking away the one thing he takes pride in; his art. The only good thing in his life is Courtney, who believes in him and genuinely cares. However, his insecurities about his powers have made him cautious. Lily and Sofus are trying to mould their grandson into a version of his father.

However, having Courtney as an anchor is probably the last thing Lily and Sofus had in mind when Cameron’s powers started to present themselves. Courtney offers the missing piece to the darkness he is feeling; the light and love required to function. There is much love between Courtney and Cameron; that much is obvious. Yet, they’ve been trying to keep their feelings in check because some would disapprove.

Lily and Sofus and Pat and Barbara are four of those. Sylvester would disapprove, given Jordan killed him. His successor is dating his killer’s kid. Yeah, we can see how that conversation would go. Returning to the grandparents, they hate the Whitmore-Dugans with a burning passion.

Barbara rejected Jordan as she loved Pat, Courtney was annoying, and Mike, well, you know, killed him. Lily and Sofus know this but haven’t shared it with Cameron. It will destroy him, given his strong feelings for Courtney if they do. But it will depend on who tells him. If Courtney comes clean and tells him herself, he’ll be hurt, but at least the truth can’t be twisted. Will he go after Mike? He wouldn’t dare unless he wanted to lose her altogether.

Having Courtney become his anchor would mean deciding where Cameron’s loyalties lie. He had already told her that his grandparents said his family had had cryokinesis for generations and that he should be honouring his dad’s legacy. However, Cameron also admits that he doesn’t know what that means. There’s a reason for this. How is he supposed to continue Jordan’s journey without knowing what it entailed?

Courtney could use this to her advantage if she needs to because, as she told him, he’s kind, caring and sweet. Why waste that potential on evil? She understands his powers, given she’s dealt with learning about Cosmo. While it’s two different things entirely, we can’t forget that the magnetic connection between them is a tether for Cameron to remain in control.

Look at it this way. Courtney is Cameron’s version of Beth. He’s more in control when he’s around her. Rick is the same way with Beth. He’s not as angsty as he was before they joined the JSA. Another fact is that he doesn’t act out or get mad that much now. Beth’s calm demeanour is what balances Rick out. Courtney is the same for Cameron. Most people would’ve panicked and fled when his powers went haywire. Not Courtney.

As we’ve seen, Courtney is usually cool (no pun intended) under pressure. So seeing Cameron’s powers explode wasn’t new to her. Not only had she seen Jordan using his and what he could do with them, but superpowers aren’t something that phases her because of Cindy, who was given powers by her dad. She’s been through many superheroics in the past year, so she knows what she’s dealing with.

We know more Camney is coming, especially in the next episode, as seen in this promo image:

We also got a hint at Cameron’s powers before the season started. However, we’re unsure whether this is the same episode because of the outfits. Still, there could be a costume change, as when we see Courtney at the beginning of the next episode (according to the promo), she’s wearing the same outfit as she was in the last episode during the kiss. Or, this could be episode six; we’re not sure.

The truth is that Cameron is more in control here than he was during episode 4, given the shot cuts to Courtney’s reaction. Although come to think about it, it looks like this could occur in the Mahkent backyard where Jordan had that outburst in the flashback in Season One.

If Lily and Sofus weren’t so hellbent on getting Cameron to become a version of his father, they would see their constant assertiveness only pushing him toward Courtney. We know Lily would do anything to get her away from her grandson, and maybe telling him what happened with Mike might trigger that. We’re hoping, fingers crossed, that if it does come to this that Cameron won’t jump to conclusions and talk to Courtney about it first.
