Sofus Mahkent. Husband. Father. Grandpa. Ice Person. Two of the most mysterious characters in Stargirl‘s lexicon of characters is Sofus Mahkent, Cameron’s paternal grandpa. Like his wife, son, and grandson, Sofus has ice powers. However, he lacks a backstory outside of being a Norwegian immigrant who moved to America to give his son, Jordan, a better life. For more on the Mahkents in DC media, please visit our post on the Icicle family.

What’s interesting about Sofus is he is less of an open book. He has had fewer appearances than his wife, Lily. Most of the time, the couple appears together and speaks in Norwegian. However, Season 2 gave Lily one extra appearance, whereas Sofus only appeared in the season premiere and finale.

In the premiere, Sofus tells Lily to let Cameron be happy as Courtney was the only person who could make him genuinely smile. It’s also implied during this conversation that Sofus and Lily both know who Courtney is and what happened to Jordan.

Lily, meanwhile, doesn’t like the idea of their grandson hanging around the girl whose brother killed their son. It’s during this conversation that the elderly couple shows different opinions on how to raise Cameron. The whole Sofus thing has been annoying us for a while, so we thought with Season 3 premiering in late August, we would cover Grandpa Mahkent. We’ve also explored the Mahkent power sets.

This article will contain spoilers from previous seasons and potential plot points from Season 3.

The Loyalty Of Sofus Mahkent

From the moment of his introduction, Sofus is fiercely loyal to his son, Jordan, and his plan for Project: New America. However, he and Lily have a shared thought about whether Cameron should know who and what they are. However, Jordan is adamant that his son is kept in the dark. Finally, about six-seven months after Jordan’s death, Lily and Sofus reveal their lineage to their grandson.

Sofus is more willing to overlook things than his wife, as he tolerates Courtney to ensure his grandson is happy. So, this makes us wonder; whose side is Sofus on?

It’s hard to say exactly as we know little about his back story. However, it would appear that he has a bit of a rebellious streak, as he didn’t share the same opinion as Lily about how much Courtney made Cameron happy. This might explain why Cameron came out of his shell so quickly when he stood up to Cindy Burman.

Also, Sofus was willing to go against his son’s wishes for his son to be kept in the dark. So now, the one thing we’re not sure about is whether Lily, Sofus and Jordan even considered the possibility of Cameron having powers of his own.

From what we’ve been told onscreen, Cameron’s mother, Christine, was human. There’s no confirmation of whether this will be disputed. Given her final words to Jordan, this can be translated as she was well aware of what her husband and in-laws were.

Could Sofus Break Rank With Lily?

Sofus adores what remains of his family. However, will he break away from Lily’s perspective and do what he can to maintain Cameron’s happiness? That’s a whole other question, and there’s a reason for this.

Lily is seen to be almost as vindictive as Jordan. She threatens Cindy that if she ever tried to recruit Cameron for evil, she’d hear about it. But, on the other hand, she and Sofus willingly help their son remove William Zarick’s icy corpse.

While Sofus did as he was told without questioning it, his wife might have words for him if he broke their son’s orders. Jordan might’ve been the mastermind behind Project: New America, but his mother ensured everything went to plan.

For the sake of argument, let’s say that Sofus breaks away from Lily regarding allegiance. Where could this lead him? Could he have a one-off allegiance with the JSA? Could he feed the team secrets Lily doesn’t want to get out? Another scenario we could get is Lily killing him for ‘dishonouring’ their son.

Final Conclusion

In conclusion, Sofus probably has as much to lose as Cameron does. However, he knows more than his grandson. Also, the chances that Grandpa Mahkent breaks away from Grandma Mahkent are pretty low. They are a package deal, even if they disagree.

Though, they will have to deal with Cameron questioning what they are and what happened to his father. We’re sure Lily will happily throw Courtney under the bus, but Sofus might surprise us. But, of course, anything is possible now, and we have to wait and see what the result could be.
