It’s the show that became a pandemic staple. The Secrets She Keeps was the perfect television project to keep people’s minds off COVID-19. Starring Jessica De Gouw and Laura Carmichael, the series focuses on two women, Meghan and Agatha, who come from very different backgrounds. We wrote a review for Season 1, so be sure to check that out.
Season Two is a bit of a mixed bag for us as it didn’t centre on anything from the book on which the series is based. However, we understand that many television and film projects are based on a similar concept. DC’s Stargirl is an example of this, as its first season was based on the Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. comic series. However, the comic writer Geoff Johns also conceptualised that series.
Michael Robotham, the author of The Secret She Keeps novel, has a producer/writer role during the second season. As does actress Jessica De Gouw, who portrays Meghan. She serves as an associate producer.
Unlike the first season, season two is predictable in specific story beats. For example, when Lorelei first appears on screen, it’s clear she’s Agatha’s long-lost daughter. However, her quick defence of Agatha and desire to clear her name gives it away almost instantly. Another predictable aspect of the story is who dies. However, unlike the Lorelei twist, Jack’s death isn’t evident from the get-go.
However, it is obvious when Meghan tells Detective Cash’s partner, “we were happy.” Also, we believe that the blood that Meghan is covered in when we see her early in the season was meant to be a misdirect to what she did.
Was this tacky? We don’t believe it was, but it could’ve been done more tastefully than it was. Also, the second season didn’t scream “thriller” like the first. With Season One, there were twists that the audience didn’t see coming. The second one did. We’re not blaming the writers, including Mister Robotham, but we need to consider Season Two more of an afterthought, hoping it would succeed like the first season.
We reward The Secrets She Keeps Season 2 with three stars.
The Secrets She Keeps airs in its entirety on Paramount+, while the first one is still available on TenPlay.
