Meghan Markle’s life has changed drastically in the last four years. She has become a household name for the wrong reasons due to her using her royal status to make money. However, when she was still blogging on The Tig, she could have become the next Gwyneth Paltrow…
Meghan Markle could have made a fortune from her blog, The Tig had she not married Prince Harry. She could’ve become the next Gwyneth Paltrow minus the selling of vagina smelling candles which are sold on Goop. She threw away her blogging and failing acting career to become a royal, destined to become ‘the most famous person in the world’.
In 2020, a lot of our royal content was about Meghan and Harry’s failings in the royal family. Well, it appears that trend is going to continue in 2021. Our first Markle post of the year had to be special when we were in the car, we came up with this post idea. However, this is not a new concept so we’re not taking credit for it. Multiple media outlets reported last year that she could relaunch The Tig has being similar to the Gwyneth Paltrow brand, Goop.
That’s what we’re going to be addressing this post. The idea that Meghan could’ve made The Tig so big that it could’ve gone head-to-head with Goop. Now, these are just our thoughts. This has nothing to do with Markle’s behaviour.
What The Tig Promoted
For those who don’t know, Meghan ran a blog called The Tig from 2014 to 2017 when she was starring as Rachel Zane on Suits. She shut it down when her relationship with her now-husband, Prince Harry became serious.
Like with Goop, The Tig, which was named after Markle’s favourite wine, promoted lifestyle content. From the Wayback Machine, a lot of Meghan’s blog content is still accessible. After all, we did do a whole piece on her then admiration of Ivanka Trump for our column, Babes Against Bullshit.
However, The Tig was less controversial than Goop. If we’re honest, we can’t find any information on Markle’s blog being causing issues when it was online. Thanks to the WayBack Machine, people are only now discovering content and deeming it ‘problematic’. The TIG TALK post with Ivanka Trump who was not yet a First Daughter of the United States when it was written has been slammed in recent months.
Outside of the TIG TALK content which spoken to ‘influencers’, the site also promoted recipes, fashion advice, and travel guides, among other things. Back in the day, Meghan wasn’t as well-known as she is now so her content slipped under the radar except for her ‘hardcore’ fans from Suits.
What is Goop?
Goop is the lifestyle brand run by actress Gwyneth Paltrow which began in 2008. Yes, that is the year that she appeared in the first Iron Man film as Pepper Potts. Anyway, we’re going off topic here.
From what Paltrow revealed, she named her brand ‘Goop’ wasn’t just named after herself. She said in an interview that someone jokingly pointed out to her that for a company to be successful, it had to have a double ‘o’ in the name. A lead example is Google which is worth billions of dollars. Pair that with her initials, GP and you’ve got GOOP.
Despite being run by a famous celebrity who is an actress and Academy Award winner, Gwyneth is a strong believer in pseudoscience which has caused controversy with the scientific community. Also, GOOP is well-known for its unconventional products. Such products include:
- Weirdly named candles; hence the infamous Vagina, Orgasm, and Prenup smelling candles
- The Jade Egg – Use your imagination for that one ladies
- Vagina smelling roll perfume; spun off from the candle of the same scent
- Sex toys that are oddly shaped
- Crystal infused drink bottles
We could go on, but we won’t. When we heard the name ‘Goop’ for the first time, we instantly thought of slime or snot. Never mind a lifestyle brand with an award-winning actress at its head.
How Meghan Could’ve Achieved Success With The Tig But Without The Weird Products
Meghan knew her style (at the time) and had a love of fashion which was why it was a showcase on The Tig. However, now her choices are just bland and boring and she thinks it’s stylish and influential.
On The Tig, Meghan had a shop set up where you could buy things she used or had influence in creating. She had a few products where she teamed up with several brands. Two of these were a collaboration with the fashion label Reitmans and the beauty powerhouse, Birchbox.
At least Megsy wasn’t selling jaded eggs to stuff up your vagina. Anyway, she could have achieved so much from her blog. It’s speculated that given all the endorsements and sponsorships she had across the three years The Tig was active, she earned US$80,000. Not bad for a site that shut down due to… other callings.
Meghan appeared to be a massive influence in the beauty world and her fame would’ve gone higher had she not ditched her old life for one of even more luxury.
