As we edge closer to the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, we have one question; will there be a reference to Padmé? We were watching Alex and Mollie Damon’s Q&A on Star Wars Explained, and they were sent an interesting question. Will Padmé appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series? This got us thinking. Given the role that the senator played in the prequels as one of the key three characters, we’d have to say, yes. It is possible.
However, there is a small question of whether Natalie Portman would be eager to return to the role. Given it’s been almost twenty years since Revenge of the Sith came out, it would be entirely up to her. As Mollie mentioned in the Q&A, she [Natalie] is returning to the MCU as Jane Foster in Thor: Love and Thunder after being written out of Thor: Ragnarok. She agreed to return to the MCU as Taika Waititi promised she wouldn’t be reduced to love interest status. Anyone who follows Taika’s work will know he always follows through on his promises. Also, we’re sure Natalie jumped at the change to have Jane become a superhero. Just our two cents.
A Few Ways Padmé Could Come Into The Obi-Wan Kenobi Story
Going back to Padmé, if we’re honest, we don’t know that Natalie would return, but if the character is required, there are a few ways they could work around it.
- A passing reference – Given Padmé died during Revenge of the Sith, there might only be a mention of her. If Bail Organa appears, he’s the only other person outside of Obi-Wan and Yoda who know about Luke and Leia’s existence. Also, it’s unlikely Yoda will play a part in the story, so Bail is the only person Obi-Wan could mention Padmé to.
- A body double with CGI face – Now, this one would require Natalie’s approval. If there is a flashback scene with Padmé and Natalie wasn’t available for the role, they could still use the character, but with a body double where Natalie’s face is CGI’ed in during post-production. This would be similar to how young Luke and Leia were done in The Mandalorian, Rogue One, and Rise of Skywalker. A similar aspect played out with Tarkin in Rogue One as well. The dialogue could be spliced together from archival or unused dialogue. Though, they could get Catherine Taber to do the voice work as she did in The Clone Wars.
- Background shot – Another opinion we have, and Alex and Mollie bought this up in their Q&A video, Padmé could appear in the background of a shot out of focus. This would not require Natalie but a body double.
- Back conversation – A final opinion we could see is a scene with Padmé in it, but we don’t see her face, but it’s her voice. As we said, they could bring back Catherine Taber for the voice.
Could There Be A Discussion?
Depending on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series takes the story, there could be a conversation about Padmé at some point. Moreover, it makes sense given Luke and Leia are her children. Also, there aren’t loads of people who knew she was pregnant outside of who we mentioned earlier.
Obi-Wan probably told Owen and Beru who Luke’s mother was when he dropped the boy off to them. It would be weird for him to drop off a random baby. Though, it’s possible too that they were able to work out who their nephew’s mother was without having to ask. After all, they met Padmé when Anakin arrived at the homestead looking for his mother.
If there is a conversation, it would only be brief as to not overshadow the conflict that is coming with Vader. However, who the conversation would be between is up in the air. Obi-Wan possibly questions how Padmé would feel about Anakin’s fall. It could also be said she wouldn’t have agreed to have the twins separated.
