Did The Naberries Know About Luke And Leia?

Naberrie

We don’t see much of Padmé Amidala’s family onscreen. They appeared in deleted scenes in Attack of the Clones, but these are no longer considered canon. The only live-action appearance they’ve made that is part of continuity is at the senator’s funeral in Revenge of the Sith. So, this has made us wonder; did the Naberrie family know about Luke and Leia? We will only be covering Canon material and not Legends.

Naberrie Family In Canon

In Canon, Padmé’s family consisted of her mother, Jobal Naberrie (née Thule), father, Ruwee Naberrie, her older sister, Sola Naberrie, and her niece, Ryoo Naberrie.

There is another member named Pooja Naberrie whose relationship to the family is yet stated in canon. In Legends, she is the youngest of Sola’s daughters.

Padmé was the youngest of Ruwee and Jobal’s daughters and was the more successful of the two. She was the Queen of Naboo at fourteen and was beloved by her people. At the end of her term, she was asked by her successor, Queen Jamillia, to become Naboo’s senator.

Did The Naberrie Family Know About Padmé’s Marriage To Anakin? Were The Family Aware Of Made Of The Pregnancy?

It’s unknown how much the Naberrie family knew about the senator’s private life. It’s apparent by Padmé and Anakin’s wedding at the end of Attack of the Clones that the family wasn’t aware of her marriage as the only witnesses were the couple’s beloved droids C-3PO and R2-D2.

However, they would’ve been made aware of Padmé’s pregnancy at some point. When this was is uncertain. They obviously knew about it, as did the rest of Naboo, as Padmé’s body was altered to make it look like her child had died with her. Now, the only people who knew that the Skywalker twins had survived were Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, R2-D2, and Bail Organa. R2 joined Organa on Alderaan and watched over Leia with a mind-wiped 3PO. Organa and his wife, Queen Breha, adopted Leia while Luke was taken to Tatooine to be raised by their uncle and aunt, Owen and Beru Lars, Anakin’s stepbrother and stepsister-in-law.

There has been no story in canon so far, regarding the twins ever meeting their biological maternal family. Though, there was a story in Legends where Leia had met her cousin, Pooja, with neither of them realising they were related until years later. The closest the twins, one of them at least, have come to meeting family, is Luke meeting Ahsoka, their father’s former student. Tano tells the Mandalorian, Din Djarin that she’s “a friend of the family,” indicating her close bond with Anakin in her teenage years. This could also imply her friendship with Padmé. Though Obi-Wan was like a brother to Anakin, Luke was briefly taught by him.

Who Else Knew About The Twins?

Very few people knew about the connection that Luke and Leia had with Anakin/Vader. It’s unclear how many people knew they [the twins] were related to each other at all, outside of their inner circle. According to the book Bloodlines, Leia’s biological paternity is revealed by her rivals in the senate to prevent her from becoming the leader of the New Republic. While this revelation made people turn against her, the news turned her own son against her. Learning that his grandfather was Darth Vader pushed him away from his family. It also caused Leia and Han’s separation, and lured Ben down the same dark path Anakin had fallen years earlier.

Han obviously knew about Luke and Leia being twins, as Leia told him after the second Death Star’s destruction. Ben, Leia, and Han’s son knew as well. However, the true identity of his grandfather was kept from him to avoid a repeat of the past.

In conclusion, we do not believe the Naberrie family knew much, let alone anything about Luke and Leia. If they had, it would’ve been mentioned in books or other material.
