Stargirl: Who Is Jennifer-Lynn Hayden AKA Jade?

Look out Courtney because Jennie is coming for the Green Lantern!

A next-generation Green Lantern was teased during early Season 1 of Stargirl when our titular character, Courtney Whitmore picks up the damaged lantern from the JSA headquarters. Season 2 will bring a bit more context to this as Green Lantern’s daughter, Jennie will be arriving in Blue Valley to take back what is rightfully hers. In the teaser and the first full trailers for the upcoming season, we witness Stargirl get into a fight with Jade in her own house.

We assume this is when Jennie breaks in to retrieve the lantern. It’s possible that the cosmic staff jumps into attack mode as things get pretty heated rather quickly. We know how protective the weapon is of its owner as it alerted Pat after Courtney was attacked by Shiv and it protects both her [Courtney] and Barbara after Tigress ambushes them on Jordan’s orders to kill them.

So, who is Jennie aka Jade? Let’s find out!

Who Is Jennie?

Editor’s Note: Information comes the DC Fandom page for the New Earth version of Jennifer-Lynn Hayden.

In the comics, Jennie is the nickname for Jennifer-Lynn Hayden, the daughter of Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern. Her mother is Rose Canton better known as Thorn, an enemy of her father’s to whom he was once married. She is also the fraternal twin sister of Todd Rice aka Obsidian.

After the twins were conceived, Rose left her husband in fear she would harm her unborn babies. Once they were born, Thorn had them adopted out hence having them separated.

Jennifer-Lynn known as either Jennie or Jennie-Lynn had no idea about her twin brother until her teenage years. Once she met Todd, they discovered their father was Alan Scott aka the OG Green Lantern. They attempted to join the Justice Society because of their parentage but were knocked back. However, they did join the offspring of the JSA and the other protégés in forming Infinity, Inc.

Given who her parents were, Jennie and Todd were naturally born metahumans.

Jennie entered a relationship with Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner She briefly left Earth with him after his friend, Terry Berg was violently beaten up. However, she returned home and joined the new lineup of the Outsiders, which was headed by Donna Troy

During the Rann-Thanager War, Jennie is killed trying to stop Alexander Luthor Jr attempting to create a multiverse.

Where Jennie’s Story In Stargirl Could Take Her

As with any new character, Jennie will grow across the second season which shall be interesting to see. There are so many directions that the series could take with her that doesn’t include her dying like her comic book counterpart does. Look at the direction Yolanda and Beth will be taking. These two fabulous female characters were killed off in the comics by Eclipso – who just so happens to be joining the villains this season.

Many female characters back in the day were written purely for three reasons:

  1. To make the story being told less sexist.
  2. Give the audience (and male characters) eye candy.
  3. To be killed off saving the world while the man remains the hero.

Stargirl has always been Courtney’s story with the JSA and co as equal players. We know that Jennie will play some role in the dynamic because of this shot from the recent trailer:

The woman next to Pat has to be Jennie. It’s definitely not Yolanda because she always wears her hair up. That’s also not Yolanda’s style of clothing. It’s also not Barbara or Courtney because they’re both blondes. The woman has dark hair.

We know that Pat would’ve known Jennie’s father, Alan Scott as he was Starman’s sidekick. After all, it was Dugan that took that group photo.

Jennie’s story could be very different from her comics counterpart. She might not be a twin as there has been no confirmation of Obsidian, well not yet anyway. There are so many possibilities.

To finish this post off, we want to say that it’s nice having another legacy coming into the show. It would be nice for Rick to have someone to talk to about being the child of a superhero. Will Jennie actually join the JSA? Fingers crossed we find out soon.
