We’re less than two weeks away from Stargirl Season 3. As we gear up for an explosive Season 3 of Stargirl, we wanted to do FAQs for anyone new to the fandom or who needs a quick run-through of things before the Season starts. Also, we will cover questions that we’ve answered before and have provided links to those posts where necessary.

This post will contain spoilers for Seasons 1 and 2 and may have them for Season 3.

1. Who Is Courtney/Stargirl’s Dad?

This is a FAQ we’ve answered before. First in our post from early Season 1 and our Q&A for Season 1, but we’ll explore it again here. So, the big part of Courtney’s story in Season 1 was her absent father. Instead, she believed her dad was Sylvester Pemberton/Starman.

Courtney believed this was due to her ability to wield the cosmic staff and that her dad disappeared on Christmas Eve, the same night the Injustice Society killed the original Justice Society. In the end, it was revealed her father was Sam Kurtis, a conman who never cared about his daughter or the mother of his child, Barbara Whitmore.

After having her locket taken by Sam, Courtney realises that he never cared about her and that her true father, the man who loves her, has been on the sidelines the entire time. When she hugs Pat, Courtney realises that her family contains him, her mother, stepbrother Mike and her friends.

2. What Happened To The Zaricks?

An FAQ that no one seems to ask is what happened to William, Denise and Joey Zarick. Now, Season 1 covers this, but there is one aspect that isn’t confirmed by the end. Finally, though, we do in Season 2. We see William die at the hands of Icicle [Jordan Mahkent] after the ISA’s leader kills Joey.

However, what isn’t clear is what happens to Denise, William’s wife and Joey’s mother. She goes to leave Blue Valley, but Pat finds her car and the family cat at Zeek’s Junkyard with what looks like swamp weed inside, indicating that Denise was drowned.

It’s not until Season 2 that we get an official confirmation of whether Denise is officially dead. When Courtney ends up in the Shadowlands with Cindy Burman, she sees Denise along with Joey and William at the Shadowlands version of the diner.

3. What Happened To Mike’s Mother?

An extensive FAQ that fans love to ask is what happened to Mike Dugan’s mother. We don’t have a full explanation for this. But we do have small things that we can go off. So, the first thing is what Mike tells Courtney in ‘Shiv Part One’ when he snaps at her for hogging Pat’s attention. He tells her that he and Pat have been through a lot. Moreover, this indicates that something traumatic went down for Mike’s mother not to have a role in his life.

Another reference we get is a direct one in the Season 2 premiere. One of the first scenes is Sylvester at a diner, asking a woman named Maggie where he can find her ex-husband. When she asks which one, he references Pat by name. This woman is likely Mike’s mother. In the comics, Pat’s ex-wife and Mike’s mother was named Maggie.

The third reference to Mike’s mother is during ‘Summer School: Chapter Nine’ when Eclipso starts targeting the Whitmore-Dugans. He appears to Mike in the form of Cameron Mahkent, Icicle’s son. Again, the Eclipso-vision implies that Mike’s mother abandoned her son.

4. Where Is Todd Rice?

Jennie-Lynn Hayden’s introduction bought about an interesting question. Where is her brother, Todd Rice? We get a clue to this at the end of Season 2 when Nurse Love contacts Mister Bones to tell him that Jennie is looking for her brother.

What’s more, Jennie and Todd were in the same location. However, Todd wasn’t where Jennie thought he was. We don’t know where he’s hidden at the Helix Institute, but Season 3 may investigate this further.

5. Who Knew That Cameron Had Powers?

Cameron’s powers have taken a long time to manifest. The first time we get a clue is when he blows out the birthday on his mother’s birthday cake on her behalf. He had ice breath. Then, about six months later, his cryokinesis started coming through. So, who knew about this?

It’s hard to say how much Jordan, Lily and Sofus knew. Jordan was adamant that his son not be told about his ancestry. More on that later. However, Lily and Sofus, after their son’s death at the hands of Mike Dugan, decide to tell their grandson about who and what they are.

We’ve also debated whether Christine knew about her son’s powers. As far as we know, it was a waiting game to see whether Cameron would inherit powers as his mother was human, giving him a 50/50 chance. But unfortunately, Christine didn’t live long enough to see whether Cameron would follow in his father’s footsteps.

6. Where Did The Gambler Disappear To?

One of the biggest mysteries and an extensive FAQ from the Season 1 finale was “what happened to the Gambler?” Well, we’ll get an answer to this in the Season 3 premiere. Steven Sharpe is returning to Blue Valley. However, we don’t know where he’s been all this time.

The synopsis for episode one says that he wants to make amends, hence why he is back in Blue Valley. Hopefully, we’ll find out when he appears. His last appearance was in the Season 1 finale.

7. Why Did Cindy Have An Issue With Courtney?

For our following FAQ, we want to go over why Cindy had an issue with Courtney when she stood up to her. We know that Cindy loves not following the rules. She was the Queen Bee of Blue Valley High and didn’t like the new girl sticking her nose in and having her victims stand up to her.

Cindy enjoyed having power over others as it disguised her longing for a relationship with her dad. But unfortunately, Courtney wasn’t like everyone else at the school, and Cindy saw this when she stood up to Henry and his friends for slut-shaming Yolanda.

8. Will Solomon Grundy Come Back To Life?

Rick’s arc with Solomon Grundy ended last Season after Eclipso kills the zombie during the final fight. Rick mourns his new friend and buries him in the forest. However, the Shade appears and tells him that if he buries the beast in the right spot, he’ll reanimate later.

So, this begs the question. Will Grundy come back to life? He may, but we don’t believe it will be this Season. We don’t know how big the time jump will be. There was a six-month time jump between Season 1 and Season 2. We also don’t know how long it takes for Grundy to resurrect. It could take anywhere from a few days to a few years.

9. Could Beth Get Her Comic Book Suit?

Season 2’s finale had Beth’s parents, James and Bridget, get back together and discover their daughter’s superhero antics. Bridget suggests a suit upgrade. She’s referencing Beth’s yellow and black suit in the comics. So could this happen in the show?

Yes, it could, but it might not be for a while, and there may need to be a big reason for a suit change.

10. Why Can’t Todd Wield The Green Lantern Like His Sister Can?

We haven’t seen Todd Rice yet, but there is a FAQ that we need to ask. Why can’t Todd wield his father, Alan Scott’s lantern, the way his sister can? It’s unclear why but from a behind-the-scenes perspective, it might have something to do with wanting a female Green Lantern.

From what we’ve heard, Todd has ties to the Shadowlands. It could be a way to make his powers different from his father and sister.

11. What Happened To Jay Garrick?

How exciting to see John Wesley Shipp play Earth-2’s version of Jay Garrick? Well, we don’t know what The Flash’s fate was after the destruction of the original JSA. We know that his helmet was covered in ice, indicating his death at the hands of Icicle. But there’s no corpse.

Anyone who watches anything where a character dies will know the rules. If there’s no corpse, the person’s not dead. So could it be possible that Jay faked his death and left his helmet behind? Entirely possible.

12. Why Didn’t Injustice Unlimited Survive?

So, our following FAQ is on the Injustice Unlimited front. So, in early Season 2, Cindy recruits her supervillain team to rival the JSA as a successor to the Injustice Society with the offspring of the ISA. The group was named Injustice Unlimited. However, it didn’t survive for very long. So, our question is, why?

Cindy was too hellbent on getting back at Courtney that she didn’t think her plan through. Instead, she planned to recruit Isaac Bowin, who had lost his mother, Artemis Crock, whose parents were in prison. Cameron and Mike were also on her recruitment list as Cameron had lost his dad, and Mike, well, she planned to use him as bait.

Isaac and Artemis are driven by their rage. Cameron refused to join the group as he saw what Cindy was trying to do. He knew she was trying to use his grief over losing his dad to her advantage. This made him an enemy to the group. Finally, however, he is left alone as he became irrelevant to Cindy’s plan.

Moreover, Cindy, Isaac and Artemis were incompatible as a team as they had no one to guide them and no clear goal. Also, Isaac’s death via Eclipso made it obvious they were in over their heads.

13. Why Don’t Cameron And Rick Like Each Other?

One question we’ve had since Season 2 is why don’t Cameron and Rick like each other? There was one scene where they glared at each other from across the road while Cameron was working on his father’s mural while Rick was in his car. It ends with Rick driving off after a small exchange and Cameron calling Rick a jerk. So, what gives?

This could mean anything. It could seem back to when they were kids, and Rick started to develop a bad reputation. That could come from Cameron’s perspective. Rick, however, would dislike him because he’s Jordan’s son. Jordan tried to kill the Whitmore-Dugans on multiple occasions.

14. Why Did Jordan Not Want Cameron Knowing About His Ancestry When He Has Powers?

Another FAQ we have is why Jordan did not want Cameron to know about his family history. Lily and Sofus wanted him to know, but Jordan didn’t. Why could this have been? Just because you have powers doesn’t mean you’re going to misuse them.

Jordan had a whole plan for Project: New America, but it appears he didn’t have one for Cameron’s pending power set. We’ve been over this before, but could it be possible that Jordan was hoping his son could show signs of having powers sooner? Or, perhaps he didn’t want him to know because of the criminal activity he’s been participating in with brainwashing, kidnapping people, etc.

Perhaps it escaped Jordan that his son would’ve inherited powers. There could be any number of explanations.

15. Why Was Sylvester Dismissive Of Pat?

Season 2 gave us an interesting looking at Sylvester and Pat’s relationship. While Pat might say that Sylvester was his best friend, Starman looked down on him like he was a sidekick. This is also how Ted Grant looked at Pat. However, the only ones who appreciated him from what we saw were Johnny Thunder and Jay Garrick, who were always kind to him.

So, why was Sylvester so dismissive of Pat? If we had to guess, it would protect him from getting hurt, knowing he had Mike to raise. Keeping Pat at arm’s length might’ve seemed logical to Sylvester at the time, but given where their relationship is going in Season 3 (judging by the trailers), Pat has to play parent to an adult man. Also, Sylvester appears to have forgotten that Pat is older than him by five years.

16. Will We See More Flashbacks On Characters Who Haven’t Had Much Screentime?

Flashbacks are just as crucial in Stargirl as the present-day stuff, which brings us to this FAQ. So, this begs whether there will be more flashbacks of characters we haven’t seen too much of. We may. Also, we know that Infinity Inc will form this Season (more on that later). We mention Infinity Inc because Jennie and Todd are playing roles this Season, thanks to the inclusion of Mister Bones and the Helix Institute.

Other flashbacks we could get include:

  • Christine Mahkent – involving conversations about Cameron’s powers.
  • Suzanne Ito – involving Cindy and Dragon King.
  • Lily and Sofus Mahkent – combined with Christine about Cameron.
  • The other members of the JSA we’ve only heard about.
  • Dragon King – how he became the beast.
  • Merri King – ties to Sylvester and Pat’s past.
  • Alan Scott – Jennie and Todd’s pasts.

17. Why Does Jakeem Have To Give Thunderbolt Specific Instructions?

The following FAQ is complicated as we don’t have a clear answer. So, why does Jakeem have to issue specific instructions to Thunderbolt? It’s hard to say as it takes so long to brainstorm something super specific. You can’t just say, “I want a glass of water.” To Thunderbolt, it means “I want a glass and water separately.”

It’s the rules that Thunderbolt has, we guess.

18. Who Is Ted Grant’s Son?

Okay, so this following FAQ comes from a comment that Ted Grant makes in the flashback episode in Season 2, Summer School: Chapter Nine. He mentions that Eclipso threatened to harm his son. This is the first time we’ve gotten this information in the show, and it hasn’t been repeated.

So, who is Ted’s son? We don’t know his name in the show, but in the comics, he was Thomas Bronson. He could transform into a literal cat and went by the moniker Tomcat. This information comes from the New Earth version of the character.

Thomas also had a half-brother through his father named Jake Grant. It’s hard to tell which character Ted was referring to.

19. Will Rick Get A Power Upgrade?

episode images; FAQ

A big question has been placed on whether Rick’s powers would be upgraded. Now, before the show started in 2020, it was said that Rick would be able to use the ability to see an hour into the future. Unfortunately, though, this hasn’t been seen.

Something tells us that he will do something that triggers an upgrade when he fixes the hourglass he smashed. The image above is from the trailer. The hourglass didn’t glow like that before. Beth mentions in ‘Hourman and Doctor Mid-Nite’ that the hourglass works for Rick because he’s Rex’s son, hence sharing his DNA.

Given that Rex created the first hourglass and tied it to his DNA, Rick will likely improve it and do the same thing.

20. Will Sir Justin Return With The Seven Soldiers Of Victory?

Our following FAQ will cover the Seven Soldiers of Victory and Sir Justin. So, will they appear again? There has been speculation that Justin will appear again in a more significant role later in the series run. So, fingers crossed, we see this happen.

21. Why Did Cindy Go After Yolanda?

So, a big question from Season 1 was why Cindy went after Yolanda and ruined her life. It all came down to jealousy. Yolanda had the perfect boyfriend, and everyone loved her. In addition, she had a close relationship with her family. These were all things Cindy didn’t have.

Beth and Cameron had mentioned Cindy’s change of behaviour after her mother’s death when they were in the fourth grade. During a conversation with Courtney, Beth recalls that Cindy became scary after her mother died. Cameron, meanwhile, threw Cindy’s comments about not liking her mother back at her when she tried to recruit him for Injustice Unlimited.

Cindy didn’t care about the repercussions of what would happen with Yolanda afterwards. However, her constant run-ins with Courtney have made her realise that what she did was wrong.

22. Why Did Eclipso Wait To Go After Courtney And Not Target Her When He Went After The Rest Of Her Family?

The following FAQ is a little challenging to answer, but we’ll give it a crack. So, in ‘Summer School: Chapter Nine’, Eclipso goes after the Whitmore-Dugans by drawing on their deepest fears. But unfortunately, the only one who wasn’t affected was Courtney. So, why was this?

To answer this FAQ, we need to consider who she is as an individual. She’s like the sun that shines brightly down at those around her. People are drawn to her, Cameron being a perfect example of this. She displays such a goodness factor that it was hard for Eclipso to draw off this as she was more powerful than him.

He chose the final fight because she was at her most vulnerable. Rick and Yolanda were no longer members of the JSA; this was a battle for which Courtney needed her friends more than ever. Also, her family had already been his targets. Going after her mother by sending Barbara a hallucination of Jordan was low, as was sending a vision of a powered and pissed-off Cameron after Mike. Then, there’s the whole thing with Eclipso mocking Pat.

23. Why Did Courtney Name The Cosmic Staff?

So, the following FAQ is short as there’s no full answer. Courtney chooses to name the Cosmic Staff Cosmo because it’s better than “The Staff” or “The Cosmic Staff.” Also, the staff likes it as it feels like a family pet that can play with Buddy the Bulldog, as seen when they’re chasing each other around the house when no one’s home.

24. Why Don’t Lily And Sofus Like Courtney When They Liked Barbara?

An extensive FAQ we’ve had for a while is why Lily and Sofus despise Courtney but like Barbara. Courtney is more of a threat than Barbara is. While Sofus has softened towards Courtney slightly as she is the only person who can make their grandson smile, Lily still sees her as an annoyance. She’s not shy about voicing this either. However, she doesn’t vocalise it in English.

25. Who Is Eviler? Brainwave Or Icicle?

This FAQ was mentioned on the Stargirl Fandom. Who is eviler? Brainwave or Icicle? It depends on who you agree with more.

Brainwave is eviler to us because he has zero regards for other humans. Icicle, meanwhile, did. So let’s examine both villains, shall we?

Brainwave hated people because they all had ugly thoughts. However, Icicle wants to help the world even if his thought process is messed up.

Icicle had a good relationship with Cameron and wanted to make the world safer for him. But unfortunately, Brainwave abused Henry and took his power after killing him.

26. Why Is The Seven Soldiers Of Victory Called That When There Are Eight Members?

This FAQ is interesting as Courtney brings it up in Season 1. There might be eight members of the Seven Soldiers of Victory, so it doesn’t make sense. However, the name sounds better than ‘The Eight Soldiers of Victory.’

27. Will Infinity Inc Form?

So, a while ago, we learned that there would be a two-story arc called ‘Infinity Inc.’. We’ve seen multiple characters from the group over the first two seasons, but this is where it will finally come to fruition. It has been said that the two-parter will focus on Jennie and Todd’s backstory. But, we believe it might go a bit deeper.

At the end of Season 2, Mike and Jakeem were going to start their own team alongside the JSA. However, there has been a suggestion by we think it was Pagey on his last Stargirl video that the JSA could rebrand and become Infinity Inc. The reason for this logic comes from the comics. Let us explain.

Infinity Inc in the comics was a splinter group containing the JSA’s legacies and protégés. Rick, Beth, and Yolanda were all part of this group. Jennie and Todd were also members. The only one who wasn’t was Courtney.

Also, Infinity Inc played a massive role in the storyline containing Mister Bones. However, we do not believe the JSA will rebrand as it’s too late. Though, we could see Mike and Jakeem joining forces with Jennie and Todd so that the JSA is not overflowing with members.

28. Will Cheshire Show Up?

Okay, this is a FAQ. We see a ton on the Stargirl Wiki. Will Cheshire show up in the series? Now, there are two answers to this.

The first answer is yes; it is entirely possible.

Our second answer is more complex.

Now, we mention this because a ton of people believe that Cheshire is the sister of Artemis Crock. While this is true in the animated series Young Justice, it is not a part of the comics. So, while Jade Nguyen/Cheshire does exist in DC Comics, she is NOT related to the Crocks. We addressed this in our deep-dive into the Crock family.

The writers of Young Justice had to take creative liberties with Artemis’ character to make her more interesting. She had to have a reason to hide her family connections, and having Jade be her older sister who was threatening to expose her was that reason. Sportmaster isn’t much of a threat. He had a different plan that didn’t involve his daughters. Huntress (as Paula is known in YJ) is reformed.

29. Why Did Cindy Have A Change Of Heart?

Cindy’s change of heart is interesting for a couple of reasons. The first is it was entirely unexpected. We expected her to be a villain for the entire show’s run. However, the second is that we never thought she’d go to Yolanda for approval before she asked Courtney to join the JSA.

Having lost so much due to her arrogance and need for revenge, Cindy saw that Courtney wasn’t so bad. We believe that her time in the Shadowlands before Courtney was dragged there by Eclipso softened her. Cindy mentions having killed her dad and Courtney countless times during her time there that it got boring for her.

Also, seeing that the JSA had formed a family-like relationship outside of missions is what she wanted as well.

30. Will Mike Take On The STRIPE Mantle Permanently?

So, after Mike took control of STRIPE in the fight against Eclipso, he got a taste of what his dad does. Could this lead to the JSA legacy taking on the robot permanently? It’s entirely possible if Pat chooses to retire. This was hinted at in the Stars and STRIPE comic, but there was never a conclusion that said Mike did take on the mantle of STRIPE.

31. Could Camney Go Up In Flames?

Mike’s killing of Icicle is still a plot thread that hasn’t been entirely resolved. It’s so much a plot thread that it could potentially ruin Courtney and Cameron’s relationship. Courtney is placed in an impossible position. She could either tell Cameron what Mike and he and his grandparents go after her brother. Or, she could say nothing, and it still comes out.

Either way, Camney could go up in flames before it’s even started. Brec [Bassinger] teased at The CW Upfronts that Courtney and Cameron’s relationship would resemble more of a relationship. She even called it the world’s longest slow burn. It’s a true statement.

Though there is a point that people haven’t considered. What if Lily and Sofus told Cameron everything offscreen? We know from the Season 2 finale that they decide to go against what Jordan wanted and tell him what they are. What are the chances that Cameron is torn up inside about the betrayal and uses Courtney as a form of revenge? Entirely possible.

32. Will Paula, Artemis And Crusher Become JSA Members?

The Season 3 subtitle is frenemies, and the Crocks will play a central role. Now that they’re reformed (sort of), they could become heroes in their own right. For example, they could join the JSA. As we mentioned earlier, Paula in Young Justice reformed. Artemis was always a hero but had to go undercover as a villain during Season 2. Sportsmaster, however, never changed his ways.

We know from the trailer that the Crocks will struggle to keep their noses clean. Episode two for the Season will involve Barbara stepping in to help Paula. As for the Crocks becoming JSA members, we don’t believe they will be full-fledged members, but they’d be allies.

33. Will Yolanda Free Herself From Her Abusive Family?

An extensive FAQ, a lot of people, have asked is whether Yolanda will emancipate herself from her family. That’s a great question that we have no answer for. Of course, she could, but it will depend on whether a story can be written from this. We don’t see the Montez family that much anyway. We’ve seen Yolanda’s father, grandma and cousin Alex one time. We’ve seen her mother twice.

Yolanda is free of her family, except when she’s offscreen. Also, the family could be going through counselling at the behest of Father Thomas, who wasn’t happy that Maria (Yolanda’s mother) refused to forgive her daughter for the photo scandal.

34. Could Todd Start Out As A Superhero Or A Villain?

Todd Rice has played both sides of the superhero spectrum. He’s been a hero and a villain. In the comics, his father is a superhero, and his mother is a supervillain. So, which side will he start on in Stargirl? We believe he could begin as a villain, given his ties to Mister Bones.

35. Will Bridget And James Chapel Serve A Similar Role To Barbara For The JSA?

So, an interesting FAQ is whether Bridget and James Chapel, aka Beth’s parents, will play a similar role to Barbara. We think they could. Also, Bridget has medical expertise that Beth doesn’t. She knows small things because her mother would’ve shown her. James, meanwhile, could serve as something Barbara could talk to, given both their daughters are superheroes.

36. Who Are Mister Bones And Nurse Love?

Mister Bones and Nurse Love are the villains for Season 3. We won’t go too deeply into them here, as we’ll do a more extensive post when they show up. To read more about who they are in the comics, please go to their respective DC Fandom pages; Mister Bones and Doctor Benjamin Love. Mister Bones is a neutral character in the comics, a bit like The Shade (more on him later).

In Stargirl, Mister Bones and Nurse Love (the genderbent version of Benjamin Love) run the Helix Institute, which is secretly holding Todd Rice, which leads us to our following FAQ.

37. Why Is Mister Bones Keeping Todd Away From Jennie?

As we reach the end of this FAQ, we need to ask why Mister Bones is keeping Todd away from his sister. If we had to guess, he could be trying to use him for his abilities. But, on the other hand, keeping him isolated from Jennie would mean making him see her as not caring to the point she is made out to be his enemy.

38. Why Were The Legacies A Closely Guarded Secret?

The JSA and ISA legacies are a big focus in Stargirl. as we learned in ‘Summer School: Chapter Nine’, the JSA legacies were not talked about among the JSA. The team knew about each other’s families, but this was as far as it goes. It would’ve been a safety precaution. They were so secretive about the kids that most didn’t know who the kids were. An example of this is Rick Tyler. Pat was friends with Rex and Wendi, his parents, but had no idea they had a child. It appears that Alan Scott also kept his twins a secret as Jennie has to verify that she is Green Lantern’s daughter.

It appears the same with the ISA, and the children were off-limits. Also, it was a betrayal if one member went after one of the children. Jordan went after Joey and killed him to get William to comply, and The Wizard went after him, knowing he murdered his son.

39. Why Did Cindy Go To Yolanda About Admission Into The JSA First?

For our second-last FAQ, we need to ask why Cindy went to Yolanda about joining the JSA before she went to Courtney. We believe it is due to Cindy’s respect for the close bond between Yolanda and Courtney.

She knows that Courtney doesn’t do anything without Yolanda’s input and felt it was essential to ask the most likely person to say “no” first.

40. Whose Side Is The Shade On?

Finally, we reached the last FAQ. So, is The Shade a good or a bad guy? We want to know the same thing. We believe he is leaning towards the good side, but we don’t think he has a side. He will do what benefits him.
