Look out, Peter Parker. There’s a new Spider-person on their way. Entertainment Weekly’s Christian Holub confirms that Dakota Johnson will play Madame Web in an upcoming Sony film based on Spider-Man supporting characters. Depicted in Marvel Comics as an elderly, disabled woman named Cassandra Webb, the film will possibly focus on a younger version of the character.
This appears to be the case given Dakota’s age. However, we will not know anything until more information is available. Also, this is not the film Olivia Wilde will be directing. Her film will be based on Spider-Woman. However, it is unclear which version of that character her project will focus on.
What’s more, is Madame Web will be the first SSU film to have a female director and a female lead. This is in contrast to how it took over a decade before a woman was considered good enough to direct an MCU film. Anna Boden co-directed Captain Marvel.
Behind-The-Scenes
The Madame Web film will be directed by S.J. Clarkson, a famed television director. She is best known for directing Marvel Television shows, The Defenders and Jessica Jones. Her latest television venture will be the upcoming Games of Thrones prequel series. Previous credits she has includes Ugly Betty and Dexter. S.J.’s resume is quite impressive we have to say. Madame Web will be scribed by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
Finally, the movie will join the first two Venom films and the upcoming Morbius film. Kraven the Hunter is slated to be just before Madame Web in the release schedule. Meanwhile, a third Venom film is in development, and a television series on Silk is also in the pipeline.
When we have more on Dakota Johnson’s role as Madame Web, we’ll be sure to share. Right now, though, we have Morbius to look forward to after almost two years of delays.
