Dragons: The Nine Realms – A Breakdown Of The First Season

breakdown

Now that is what we call different. Dragons: The Nine Realms is here, and it’s certainly unique to what the original media with Hiccup and co was. We thought we’d do a breakdown of everything in the first season. Since the season is only six half-hour episodes, it’s easier. Though, the series is far from perfect. If the season had more episodes for the audience to get to know the characters better, it mightn’t feel so fast-paced.

The original television series and the film trilogy were evenly paced. Ultimately, it gave the characters room to breathe and develop. Meanwhile, everyone in this new show has one episode before the action takes place in the finale. However, Tom gets two episodes as he’s the lead character.

Without further ado, let’s jump into the breakdown for Dragons: The Nine Realms Season One. Please note that this post does have any connection to the differences from the original franchise or the women.

Thunder Is NOT Toothless

Firstly, we breakdown and address Thunder’s relationship with Tom. We wanted to compare it to Hiccup and Toothless.

Toothless started off as standoffish when he met Hiccup. It took time for him to create trust. Thunder, however, is curious about Tom.

Moving over to how similar Thunder and Toothless are to each other, they have the same crest. However, Toothless’ which we assume Hiccup came up with, has a red tail fin.

Thunder and Toothless are both leaders. In the Dragons series, there was a storyline where Hiccup and Toothless go searching for other Night Furies but end up walking into a trap set by Mildew. In Nine Realms, Thunder tries to go up into the skies to find others of his kind.

Our main question is whether the Night Light species is endangered. Since the first season is six episodes, it’s hard to establish.

It should also be noted that the way Thunder charges his power is similar to Toothless. Moreover, his plasma blasts also run out after so many. A Night Fury’s charges run out after six it could be similar with Thunder.

Finally, there is a scene that mirrors the feeding scene in the original film where Hiccup tries to work out what Toothless eats and ends up having to eat a regurgitated fishhead with the dragon’s insistence. In The Nine Realms, a similar scene takes place where Tom has Thunder try a variety of foods. The dragon rejects everything but loves the frozen fish nuggets which Tom hates. However, he is forced to eat them when Thunder growls at him.

Tom and Olivia Are Descended From Vikings

As our second point in this breakdown, Tom mentions to his mother, Olivia that they’re descended from Vikings. As proof, he pulls out an old helmet and puts it on. This was also hinted up in the opening prologue in the first episode with a rehash of events from the original film. Also, the logo on the front of the book Tom reads from during the sequence has the Night Fury logo that has appeared across canon media.

We’re not sure, but the helmet looks like it belonged to the Haddock clan and was passed down through the generations.

The helmet resembles Stoick’s helmet. As mentioned in a previous breakdown post, the Kullersen surname translates from Danish as Son of Haddock. Ultimately, this implies that Tom and Olivia are descendants of Hiccup and his family. While it is not officially confirmed, this is our gut feeling.

Breakdown Of Tom’s Friends And Their Dragons

Tom’s friends are similar to the Berk dragon riders who accompanied Hiccup in his adventures.

D’Angelo is seen to be by the book but then chooses to break the rules. While this doesn’t match any of Hiccup’s friends, he does have similarities to Fishlegs, who fawns over his dragon, Meatlug. When D’Angelo

Alex is also seen to be similar to Fishlegs as she’s smart. She’s also afraid of everything.

Jun, Tom’s first recruit, is similar to Tom’s possible ancestor, Astrid, who eventually married Hiccup. Her Mist Twister, Wei and Wu, bear some resemblance to Barf and Belch, the Hideous Zippleback owned by Ruffnut and Tuffnut.

The Hidden World

The kids find the Hidden World and know that it has to be protected. This is the same reason the dragons went to the Hidden World in the first place. The outside world had become too dangerous for them, so they had to retreat into the Hidden World.

Though, Hiccup and Astrid were able to track down Hiccup, the Light Fury, and Stormfly and allow them to meet their children, Zephyr and Nuffink.

Tom’s Mannerisms

Our final breakdown in this post is some of Tom’s mannerisms. There were moments where he greatly resembled Hiccup. One of these moments was when he works out that for a dragon to bond with its rider, it needs to go to the rider. By reaching out with his hand, he had to wait for Thunder to push his nose into his hand.

Hiccup discovers this by accident as he’s observing Toothless.

The shudder Tom makes when Thunder forces him to eat the frozen fish nuggets is reminiscent of the Viking who started it all.
