The topic of race should never be abused – What truly makes a person of colour “black?” We can thank a certain duchess for bringing this discussion to light. So, it is a constant battle of double standards on social media regarding race. If you’re a person of colour, you’re apparently not allowed to be criticised. But, it’s okay for a white individual to be labelled as a “racist” without any evidence.
To classify yourself as black, you only need to have a single drop of black blood running through your veins. You could be Caucasian, and one of your ancestors could’ve been an enslaved Black person. But, you can still identify as black.
According to Meghan Markle, she is a person of colour. Her mother is African-American. In her eyes, this is all that matters. But, wait. Hold up. Her father is Caucasian. Oh, wait. He is not essential as he no longer fits her narrative as he could drop bombshells of who she truly is. That is why he never met Harry or the royals in person.
Meghan’s upbringing with her dad was never a secret. However, she portrayed herself as white for a large portion of her life. She used the race card to garner sympathy when she needed to be black.
The College Sorority
When Meghan was attending Northwestern University, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, according to a November 2017 article by Caroline Halleman of Town and Country Magazine.
As per the sorority’s website, the pictures show a group of primarily young Caucasian women. Also, the alumni page lists actress Sophia Bush and Entertainment journalist Nancy O’Dell. Meghan is not listed at all. According to the Daily Northwestern’s reporter Ruiqi Chen who wrote the 2018 guide to Greek Life at NU, there are several African-American Fraternities and Sororities at the university. So, this begs the question. If Meghan portrays herself as black, why didn’t she rush for a sorority for black women?
Everything Meghan says about being a person of colour is hypocritical to how she was raised. Yes, her mother is African-American, but she forgets her Caucasian heritage. In addition, Northwestern University is a different place now from when the former actress attended.
However, for the duchess to not be listed on the alumni page, which is incomplete, something horrible might’ve gone down.
The Case Of The White Woman Who Believes She Is Black
This post was never supposed to be about solely Meghan. We intend to keep that promise in whatever way we can. So, we wanted to bring your attention to a story that came up a few years ago about Rachel Dolezal, a white woman who fell into the public spotlight in America because she claimed she was black.
So, Rachel Dolezal is a pathological liar. Her family alleges that she took elements of her parents’ lives before her birth and incorporated it into her own fantasy.
Her parents, who are caucasian, publicly came out in 2015 to slam their daughter for passing off her racial identity for something it wasn’t. Dolezal then claimed she self-identified as black, despite being born white. There’s so much to this story that is so mind-boggling that you would think it was the plot of a trippy movie. First, Rachel claimed that she was the victim of racial hate crimes. However, a police investigation could not find evidence to support her claims.
Not only that, she attempted to sue Howard University in 2002 for discrimination and failed.
Conclusion
As a white woman, it is not for me to tell a black person what makes them a person. However, I do not believe in using race as a weapon. Unfortunately, Meghan Markle has used it, and while it worked for a short while, it is beginning to wear thin. Conclusively, Rachel Dolezal needs serious help. Her lies unravelled so fast that her reputation has never recovered, resulting in her change of name.
