A baby is coming for Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist and Chris Wood! The couple announced on Instagram they are expecting their first child together. Baby Wood is coming and the couple revealed their joy on Instagram!
It’s been a tough few months for the pair as Benoist opened up last year about being a survivor of domestic abuse in a previous relationship. Wood ultimately supported his wife through the hardship of exposing her unnamed abuser. However, a lot of people are wondering how Melissa’s pregnancy will effect filming for Season 6 of the hit CW series.
As the main star of Supergirl, Melissa will need to to take it easy while pregnant. This means that she won’t be able to hide her baby bump when she’s in her Supergirl getup.
Handling Cast Pregnancies
The show has dealt with pregnant actresses before. During the Elseworlds crossover, Bitsie Tulloch (Lois Lane) was pregnant with her first baby. Since she only appeared in the first and third parts of the event, they were able to shoot around her belly. However, there were scenes where there was a baby bump.
During Seasons 4 and 5, reoccurring star Andrea Brooks (Eve) was pregnant and was filmed from above the stomach with the occasional shot on her belly which was concealed either by clothing or standing behind a table or something to cover the bump.
However, being the titular character and being pregnant will be a challenge, given how often Melissa is onscreen. There is a few ways they could work around it:
- Stand Ins/Body Doubles – This is the most obvious thing they could do, though it might be a bit awkward for dialogue scenes. It wouldn’t be too much of an issue for stunt scenes.
- Larger Clothing – Clothing is another option. Given we see Melissa wearing jackets and jumpers a lot, they may use these to conceal her belly once she begins showing.
- Write It Into The Storyline – On occasion, the writers on a show will write the pregnancy into the storyline. Somehow we doubt this idea will be used, given Kara doesn’t have a proper love interest at the moment. William is a potential candidate for this story device, but it’s still doubtful. There’s also the chance that Kara could act as a surrogate for Alex, that way Melissa wouldn’t have to hide it.
- Camera Tricks and CGI – There’s also camera tricks and CGI techniques that can be used too. After all, Scarlett Johansson’s baby bump was digitally removed in some scenes in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
How Far Along Is Melissa?
We’re not exactly sure how far along Melissa is at this point. Given she and Chris chose to announce the pending arrival now would mean she’s over the three month mark.
At the moment, Melissa isn’t showing. Sneaky set photos uncovered by The DCTV Show, which has Benoist and co-star, Katie McGrath filming a scene. However, she was wearing civilian clothing. When filming returns in a few months for Season 6, they’ll have to work around her with costuming.
