They’re not the actors you would think off when it comes to Bruce Wayne’s butler and enemy, Penguin, but we’re willing to give these two gentlemen a go…
In the last few hours, it’s come to light that Andy Serkis is in talks to play Alfred Pennyworth while Colin Farrell is speculated to take on the role of Penguin in Matt Reeves’s The Batman.
We’re so excited about these potential castings that we’re going to be talking about it length.
Unexpected Choices
When you think Alfred Pennyworth, you think elderly gentleman who raised Bruce after his parents were murdered. As for Penguin, you think Danny DeVito in Tim Burton’s Batman. In other words, you wouldn’t even consider Serkis and Farrell for the characters they’re up for.
Most considered Serkis to be Penguin. Why? Well, he’s played a villain before. Remember Avengers: Age of Ultron where it introduced Ulysses Klaue before his larger role in Black Panther? Or Gollum in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit?
These were some of his finest roles. We also cannot forget his amazing performance in the Planet of the Apes trilogy as Caesar. He is truly the legacy of Caesar after all. Let’s hope he does another Apes film.
Farrell has played the a-hole a few times. He played Percival Graves in Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them and he was in Saving Mr Banks as the alcoholic father of the author who wrote Mary Poppins. Oh, and he was the father in Tim Burton’s Dumbo. This comes a few weeks after talks broke down with Jonah Hill who was offered the role.
Can They Pull It Off?
Hell to the yes! While they don’t look the part, they’ll surprise us. We have total faith. They’ve played similar parts before, so it’s time to shake it up a little! It’s time for Serkis to play a paternal figure that isn’t a father so that’s makes him the perfect Pennyworth. Farrell definitely needs a villain role on his resume and the Penguin would be a good fit.
Farrell and Serkis, who are both fathers themselves deserve a chance to prove themselves. They’ve played certain roles for so long that they’ve become accustomed to fans fan-casting them in similar roles. We’re sure their children would agree. Also, wouldn’t be something if Serkis’s youngest son Louis played a younger Bruce? That would be super cool!
Sure, Caesar became a father to two sons, but Alfred became a surrogate father to Wayne who was notorious for being dark and brooding. Penguin on the other hand isn’t a character we’d think we would see Farrell attach to, like ever.
We will just have to wait and see how it looks before we can say for sure.
