Women, Both Real And Fictional, Deserve Voices

How often do we hear the words “Her truth”? Thanks to people like Meghan Markle and Amber Heard, this is a woke conversation that needs to stop. Their desire to shut people down, especially other women, if they don’t like their opinions or align with their own is not befitting two supposed feminists. This discussion is not about them. It is about the rise of female voices speaking out when they previously could not.

A true feminist does not tread on men. A woman who views the opposite sex as inferior suffers from misandry, a hatred for the male populace. We’re sorry if this offends anyone. It’s true. We’re not against men or women. Both genders and those in between deserve recognition. We no longer live in a society where only one gender is superior. Moreover, this jumps off the guilty verdict of Chris Dawson, a former Australian football star and teacher who allegedly murdered his first wife, Lynette Dawson, in early 1982.

At the time of Lyn’s disappearance, she was dubbed a ‘runaway mother’ who abandoned her family. However, that is not what society sees today. Hedley Thomas, the journalist who helped reopen the cold case, saw a woman who was forcibly removed from her home. She adored her daughters too much to leave them motherless.

Chris Dawson was seen as a beloved man and, therefore, was believed when he fabricated the story that Lyn had called him after she disappeared. Why didn’t she call any of her friends if she had contacted him? Her family? He thought he would get away with the perfect crime for forty years. Lynette’s body has never been found.

Dawson will not tell anyone what happened to Lyn’s body as it would mean confessing his guilt. He maintains his belief that he didn’t harm her. The circumstantial evidence was against him from the beginning. Without Hedley’s podcast, Chris would be walking around scot-free.

Lynette had no voice. She couldn’t defend her actions about why she wasn’t there for her daughters as they grew up. It is just demeaning for those around her, including the police, to make out like she was a deadbeat mother. While this was the culture back in the 80s, this is not how police work is done today.

Lyn’s life meant something, especially to her daughters. However, Chris allegedly took that away from her. He wanted to live out his fantasy of having a younger lover be the mother of his children. He did not consider the consequence for those left behind.

Using Women’s Bodies Against Them – Black Widow

While Marvel Comics is a fictional universe, a great deal of real life is rooted in its stories. One example is Russian spy turned superhero Natasha Romanov, better known as Black Widow. In the earliest live-action depictions of the character, she was heavily sexualised as the male writers didn’t know who to write her outside of being eye candy. As a result, fans criticised the direction the beloved Avenger had been pushed in.

Over the years, Natasha’s depiction has improved, even after her death in Avengers: Endgame. However, it took Marvel years to give Black Widow her solo film. Finally, in 2019, the Black Widow movie started filming and would be Scarlett Johansson’s last time in the role.

In the film, we learn much more about her backstory, including how she was a soldier for General Dreykov. But unfortunately, their programming drowned out the voices of Natasha and her fellow Black Widows. Parts of Nat’s past have been referenced in previous MCU entries, But this movie shows Romanov where she must take a stand.

In this film, we learn Nat was given an involuntary hysterectomy as a child soldier to stop her from having children. Her Black Widow sisters were given the same procedure to prevent any form of attachment. General Dreykov was a misogynist who hated women having their own lives. Also, he was looking at getting back at those who disfigured his daughter, Antonia. He later used her as his puppet, Taskmaster.

The Black Widows had no control over their bodies when they graduated from the Red Room. Their service started with killing live targets, often friends they had made in the program. Nat’s infertility was referenced in Avengers: Age of Ultron when she considered running away with Bruce Banner.

Britney Spears, Caught In A Conservatorship

No one knows silence quite like Britney Spears. For a large portion of her life, other voices spoke for her due to a conservatorship in the late 2000s after multiple mental breakdowns. However, not until early 2022 could she be free of all the restraints that clouded her life. One of those restrictions was not having control over her own body; she had been given an IUD to prevent her from conceiving another child with her new partner. While it has been since removed, she has sadly miscarried a child recently.

The conservatorship that Jamie Spears, Britney’s father, controlled was meant to keep her in check until she could mentally care for herself independently. But, it turned into a money train for Mister Spears, leading to a massive war of words between Britney and a large portion of her family, including older brother Bryan and younger sister Jamie Lynn.

For so long, Britney had to pass everything through anyone in charge of her conservatorship. With her mind now clear, she can do what she wants. But it was a long road to get there, and there was a fight.

Lastly, and following in the footsteps of Natasha Romanov’s Black Widow, She-Hulk, known by her civilian name Jennifer Walters, is the paternal cousin of Bruce Banner. Like her famous relative, Jen can Hulk out but can control her abilities from the get-go. In her debut MCU appearance, it’s evident that she is one character who does not allow other voices to speak for her.

In the first couple of episodes of her self-titled television series, Jen references how many women are treated by their male counterparts. During the first episode, she tells Bruce that she has been controlling her anger for years as her job as a lawyer requires her to do so. Here, she mentions the cat calls and being called emotional, which stems from the opposite sex not seeing the potential.
