The Mystery Of Stargirl’s Father Begins To Unravel

Courtney; legacies

Look out, Arrowverse, because a new hero is coming to play! Welcome to the superhero game, Stargirl.

A new hero is being added to the Arrowverse. Set on the latest version of Earth-2, Stargirl tells the story of Courtney Whitmore, a teenage girl struggling to adjust to her new life in Blue Valley, Nebraska, with her mother Barbara, stepfather Pat, and stepbrother Mike. But, unbeknownst to her, her new ‘father’ is hiding a massive secret. He was once Stripesy, the sidekick to the infamous Starman of the Justice Society of America.

After the JSA is wiped out on Christmas Eve ten years earlier, Pat is forced to carry around the Cosmic Staff, which his stepdaughter later finds. The weapon bonds with her, but he is unsure as to why. Courtney finds a photo of the late group of heroes and compares her stepdad’s friend to her missing father and sees they look alike

Pat dismisses the idea that Sylvester could’ve been Courtney’s father despite her view that the name he used with her and her mother could’ve been an alias. While she might be right, this has not yet been established as fact though it might continue during the season.

Meet Team Stargirl

Courtney might have Pat at her disposal, but she’ll gather a team around her as Barry does with Team Flash. We meet some of the future members of Team Stargirl in the first episode.

We meet Beth Chapel, who becomes Doctor Mid-Nite, Rick Tyler, who becomes the new Hourman and Yolanda Montez, who is the new Wildcat, when Courtney is forced to sit with them during her first lunch break at her new school.

As the first season goes on, we’ll meet them in more detail, but here’s what we know about them:

  • Rick is the son of the late Rex Tyler, who served in the JSA with Pat and Starman.
  • Beth is somehow the heiress to the Doctor Mid-Nite mantle.
  • Yolanda loves boxing and uses it as stress relief.

Meet The New Injustice Society

With the original JSA out of the picture, the surviving members of the Injustice Society retire. Many have children who take on their parents’ roles to form a new version of the ISA.

Throughout the first episode, we meet several parents and their children.

  • Lawrence “Crusher” Crock and Paula Brooks appear at separate times throughout the episode though their daughter, Artemis, isn’t shown. It’s unclear whether the future Tigress will join her parents in the Injustice Society.
  • Doctor Henry King Snr is seen throughout the first episode and is known as Brainwave. He is an incredibly cold individual and has little sympathy towards anyone, especially his son, Henry Jr.
  • Jordan Mahkent is Icicle and is the one responsible for killing Starman. His son, Cameron, develops a crush on Courtney.
  • William Zarick is The Wizard, whose son, Joey, is no villain.

Jumping Back To The Mystery Of Stargirl And Her Dad

What if Courtney’s right and her father was Starman? This could be similar to Descendants, where the next generation takes over as heroes or villains. We’re already getting vibes of this through Brainwave and his son, Crusher, Paula, and Artemis and the Mahkents.

Perhaps Pat is correct, and Starman is not his stepdaughter’s father. Also, Barbara says her daughter’s dad is a deadbeat. He saw her once a year until he decided to stop showing up. However, Stargirl creator Geoff Johns wouldn’t just write something and then leave it hanging. There has to be more to the story, which we hope we’ll get eventually.

For now, we’re so happy with how the story is playing out. We cannot wait for next week’s episode.
