When you think of Doctor Strange, you usually think of Benedict Cumberbatch in the Marvel Cinematic universe. But were you aware that a Doctor Strange movie was released on television in 1978? We were aware but didn’t think much of it until we reviewed our NicheIQ suggestions on Ezoic. Given we talk about Marvel Comics on and off, it was a good opportunity to dive into this unknown film.
So that you know, we haven’t seen it and are only going off research we’ve done. According to the film’s Wikipedia page (linked above), the movie was part of a two-hour block on CBS, which also included the likes of the series, the incredibly short-lived The Amazing Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk starring Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk version of Bill Bixby’s David Banner.
No Television Series Evolved From The 1978 Doctor Strange Movie
The Doctor Strange (1978) TV movie was meant to open doors for a television series, but no series was picked up.
Finally, Characters such as Clea (played by Charlize Theron in the Multiverse of Madness post-credit scene) and Wong (played by Benedict Wong in the MCU) play a role in the TV movie. The Ancient One is portrayed as a man. The character is male in the comics, rather than the woman version Tilda Swinton depicts in the MCU.
Morgan Le Fay also plays a part in the story. She hasn’t been added to the MCU yet. But she could be, depending on the plans for the next Doctor Strange movie.
