We don’t get a lot of chances to discuss the Jordanian royal family. We’ve spoken about it a bit, but not a ton, though we would love it if we could. We’re massive Queen Rania fans here. Anyway, we’re here because we wanted to discuss whether Princess Iman lost her royal title upon marriage.
For those who might not know, in some royal houses, women lose their title if they marry a commoner. While most royal families aren’t as strict as they used to be given, there are not many royal houses left in the world; some still follow ancient customs like only males can inherit the throne, etc.
While the tradition in Jordan is for the eldest male heir to inherit the throne, women do not lose their titles if they marry commoners. Iman is still Her Royal Highness The Princess Iman.
As per custom, Iman, who was walked down the aisle by her older brother, Crown Prince Hussein, married Jameel “Jimmy” Alexander Thermiótis on March 12.
Jordanian Princesses Do NOT Lose Their Titles
Jordanian Princesses are not forced to relinquish their titles when they marry or divorce. For example, Princess Iman’s paternal grandmother is Princess Muna, who divorced King Hussein in December 1972 and kept to her Princess Consort title after the divorce.
Of all King Hussein’s wives, Muna, born in Britain as Toni Avril Gardiner, is the only Princess Consort of Jordan.
Some Royal Houses Have A Law In Place
Other royal houses, such as Japan, have strict laws where if a woman marries a commoner, they must be stripped of their titles and banished from their families. Look at the case in Japan with Princess Mako. She lost her royal title because her husband was a commoner.
At one point, it was thought that Crown Princess Victoria might have lost her status as the heir to the Swedish throne when she married her husband, Daniel. There was a rule where the monarch, in this case, Victoria’s father, the King, would have to sign off on the marriage. If he didn’t, then she would lose her title. Fortunately, this didn’t happen. Instead, Daniel was granted the title of Prince.
Finally, with Iman, her title didn’t change, and her husband was not given a title either.
