Who Plays Newt Scamander In The Fantastic Beasts Films?

Newt, Eddie

Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, has more of a role in the Wizarding World than people seem to realise. Before we jump into the character, here’s a quick look at the actor that plays Newt on-screen.

Eddie Redmayne is a well-known English actor who is probably best remembered for his roles in biopics. However, his most memorable part is when he portrayed Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. He also played a transgender woman in The Danish Girl. One of his breakout roles was in 2008’s The Other Boleyn Girl, where he portrayed William Stafford. He attended Eton College, where he was in the same year as Prince William. He also is associated with the Soho House set, but that’s for another post.

Redmayne has played Newt Scamander, famed Magizoologist, in three films. However, given the shakeup at Warner Brothers and the underwhelming performance of The Secrets of Dumbledore at the box office, it is unknown if there will be any more films to finish Newt’s story.

A Quick Look Into Who Is Newt Scamander

Newt was first mentioned in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone as his book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them was an essential textbook for first-year students at Hogwarts.

A Hogwarts student himself, Newt was sorted into Hufflepuff. His older brother, Theseus, was also in Hufflepuff. As a student, Newt was quick to befriend Leta Lestrange, a girl Slytherin student who was seen as an outsider like he was. He falls in love with her, but they lose touch after he is expelled from Hogwarts for something she did. Newt took the fall for her actions.

Eventually, Newt discovered that Leta had become engaged to his brother, making them almost in-laws. Leta sacrificed herself for the Scamander brothers, leaving them both devastated.

Later in life, Newt married Tina Goldstein, an American witch. They had at least one child who would become the parent of Rolf Scamander.

Rolf would marry Luna Lovegood, a friend of Harry Potter, and they would have twin sons, Lycan and Lysander.
