Who Is Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Obi-Wan

Hello There – He’s the Master of Trolling with a big heart, which keeps getting crushed. Obi-Wan Kenobi is about to re-enter the realm of live-action in the six-part series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show will centre on Kenobi ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and that fateful duel that saw his former apprentice and best friend, Anakin Skywalker, become Darth Vader.

After that event, Obi-Wan is left broken and battered and lost to the sands of time (and his hiding place of Tatooine). Everything he had fought for was gone. His friends. The Order he obediently served until its destruction. The love of his life. His best friend. Everything. Just. Gone.

Kenobi isolates himself from the Force and watches Anakin’s young son, Luke, as he grows up under the care of Skywalker’s stepbrother and stepsister-in-law, Owen and Beru Lars. He keeps his head down and remains out of trouble until a new adventure comes calling.

We’re going to cover Obi-Wan and his life leading up to the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi. We will not be covering anything after that. Therefore, this post will NOT be including comics, games or books as sources.

The Beginning

Obi-Wan Kenobi was born on Stewjon. At a young age, he was taken to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, where he would begin his journey to becoming the Jedi Master we come to know and love. His Wookieepedia page depicts him as a youth as being rebellious. Just reading that is surprising, given his wit and thirst for doing what the Jedi Council says.

Anyway, Kenobi was trained in primary lightsaber forms and techniques by Cin Drallig and was taught in a Youngling clan by Master Yoda. However, because of Obi-Wan’s behaviour as a rebel, not many Jedi Knights or Masters were willing to take Obi-Wan on as a student until Qui-Gon Jinn.

Jinn saw that Obi-Wan had the potential to become a great Jedi and took him on as a Padawan. As a Padawan, the duo would go on many missions, including one where Kenobi would meet Duchess Satine Kryze, the leader of Mandalore. The pair would fall in love but end their relationship as they valued their careers too much.

Obi-Wan Meets Anakin

Years later, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are on a mission to protect Queen Padmé Amidala during the Blockade over Naboo when they become stranded on Tatooine. Jinn, Amidala and Jar Jar Binks search for new parts to repair their damaged ship when they come across a small boy working at a Junk Shop. Kenobi remains on board the vessel with Sabé, who sits in for Padmé.

The boy, Anakin, and his mother, Shmi, are enslaved and have been working for Watto for years. After securing his freedom upon winning the Boonta Eve Classic Podrace, the child is free to become a Jedi. When Qui-Gon is forced to fend off Sith Assassin Darth Maul, Anakin is sent ahead to the ship, where he tells Obi-Wan and the pilot to take off.

Qui-Gon clambers on board after the fight; he introduces the boy to Obi-Wan. Upon their return to Coruscant, Kenobi and the Jedi Council refuse to believe that Anakin is the Chosen One of prophecy. The High Council declines Skywalker training.

Obi-Wan lectures Qui-Gon about defying the council for the umpteenth time. What’s more, this side of Kenobi is the opposite of how he was when he was a child.

Losing Qui-Gon And Beginning Anakin’s Training

After helping Padmé gain the allegiance of Boss Nass and the Gungans, the Jedi are forced to duel with Maul, but it comes at a cost. Qui-Gon is struck down by the Sith, much to the devastation of Obi-Wan. Despite his grief, Kenobi fought back against Maul and won by slicing him in two and watching his remains fall down the reactor shaft. For over a decade, Kenobi would believe his Master’s killer was dead until Maul resurfaced on the junk planet of Lotho Minor years later.

Obi-Wan promised Qui-Gon that he would fulfil his wish to train Anakin. Kenobi relayed the message to Anakin at their mentor’s funeral. While the Jedi Council weren’t thrilled with the idea of Skywalker becoming a Jedi, they wanted to fulfil Jinn’s wish for the boy to live up to the prophecy.

Kenobi and Skywalker attended the celebrations on Naboo. A new era was about to begin.

Reunion With Padmé And The Search For Kamino

A decade later, Obi-Wan and Anakin cross paths with Padmé once more. Now a senator, she has become the target of an assassination. After a second failed attempt on her life, Kenobi is sent looking for answers, while Skywalker goes with her to Naboo.

While Anakin and Padmé wrestle with their feelings for each other, Obi-Wan begins his investigation with the toxic dart that kills bounty hunter Zam Wesell. Next, Kenobi pays his old friend Dexter Jettster a visit at his diner, where he learns about the Kaminoan cloning facility.

In the Jedi Archives, Obi-Wan cannot locate Kamino on the star charts. Jocasta Nu denies that the planet exists as it is not on any map. Finally, hitting a roadblock, he goes to Yoda, who is teaching a class of younglings.

Yoda jokes with his students that it’s embarrassing that Obi-Wan can’t find a planet on a star chart. One of Yoda’s students remarks that perhaps Kamino has been removed from the map’s memory. As it turns out, the child is correct.

Kamino does exist but was erased from the maps at the Jedi Temple for an unknown reason.

The Bounty Hunter And Capture On Geonosis

Arriving on Kamino, Obi-Wan learns from Prime Minister Lama Su that there is a clone army on the way for the Republic, ordered by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas a decade prior. Kenobi explained that Sifo-Dyas was killed years ago. The Kaminoan Leader tells Obi-Wan about the template being used for the clones; a bounty hunter named Jango Fett.

Kenobi meets with the bounty hunter and his son, Boba, a clone of himself whom he was raising as his son. Obi-Wan senses something is off from the beginning of their exchange and pursues them. However, before they leave Kamino, the Jedi Knight places a tracker on their ship, Slave One.

Ultimately, this leads Obi-Wan to Geonosis, where he is captured, but not before discovering that Anakin and Padmé have left Naboo and gone to Tatooine. Annoyed, he sends them a message before he is captured.

Near-Execution And The Opening Battle Of The Clone Wars

Obi-Wan is taken to the Geonosian arena, where he is chained to a pole, wanting to be executed. Little did he know that Anakin, Padmé, R2D2, and C-3PO had arrived on the planet, gone through a droid factory, and been captured.

When he sees Anakin being led out into the arena, Obi-Wan takes a shot at him for disobeying his mandate. Skywalker then attempts to defend himself by saying he and Padmé did as he asked before coming to rescue him. But, unfortunately, it doesn’t help matters.

When the trio manage to free themselves from their tethers, they fight off their would-be executioners just in time for Jedi reinforcements to arrive. The battle would become known as the First Battle of Geonosis as another conflict would be fought on the planet later in the war.

Obi-Wan and Anakin then track down Dooku, the former master of Qui-Gon, but not before their gunship is attacked and Padmé is thrown out of the ship, much to Skywalker’s distress. Kenobi warns him not to let his feelings get in the way of their mission. Obi-Wan makes Anakin question what the senator would do if their positions were reversed.

Failed Attempt To Capture Dooku

Obi-Wan and Anakin arrive at Dooku’s hiding place to find he’s about to leave like a coward. Skywalker rushes him and is immediately shot down by Force lightning. Kenobi jumps in to protect his student from further attacks.

The Jedi pair are quick to recover, and a lightsaber duel ensues. Unfortunately, Anakin ends up losing his right arm in the process. Obi-Wan is severely injured in the fight, and they both would’ve died if Yoda had not arrived. The Sith Lord escapes while the Clones and an uninjured Padmé arrive to help the two injured Jedi.

Kenobi returns to Coruscant and meets with Mace Windu and Yoda. Anakin returns Senator Amidala to Naboo, where he secretly marries her under the noses of the Jedi and his master.

The Clone Wars And Reunion With Satine

Obi-Wan fought alongside Anakin during the Clone Wars and would take a liking to his apprentice, Ahsoka Tano, becoming her grandmaster. The trio would often tag team during missions alongside their Clone Squadrons.

Captain Rex and Commander Cody formed a friendship similar to their respective Jedi Generals. Cody was fiercely loyal to Obi-Wan while Rex was the same with Anakin, though he learned to adapt to Skywalker’s unorthodox methods.

Obi-Wan was well-aware of Anakin’s attachment to Padmé but was not aware of how deep the relationship between the two went until the end of the war. Time and again, he would question Skywalker’s motives for abandoning protocol to shield the senator. Kenobi would receive the same response; she was a friend despite him knowing there was more to it.

Had he called Anakin out on it, it would’ve seen him as a hypocrite given his relationship with Satine. Instead, he and his former love would meet up on several occasions throughout the three-year conflict.

Obi-Wan would later confess that he would’ve left the Jedi Order for Satine if he had the chance. But, if anything, he wanted to allow Anakin to have what he gave up; a happy life with the woman he loved.

With Maul now on the warpath, he wanted Obi-Wan dead for what happened on Naboo all those years ago. His revenge was so fierce that he did the one thing that he knew would destroy Kenobi. When he took over Mandalore, he held Satine hostage and killed her in front of Obi-Wan before he fled, his vengeance satisfied for now.

Losing Anakin To The Dark Side

Losing Satine would haunt Obi-Wan for the rest of his life. His mortal enemy had killed his longtime love. Unfortunately, however, Kenobi’s life was about to go from bad to worse. Sometime after Ahsoka’s departure from the Jedi Order, Obi-Wan and Anakin would be reunited with the former Padawan on several missions during the last few months of the war.

One of those would be to rescue Chancellor Palpatine (Darth Sidious) from General Grievous and Dooku. Once this mission was completed, the secret Sith Lord would continue his plan to corrupt Anakin. Obi-Wan was present when the Jedi Council denied Palpatine’s request to make Anakin a Jedi Master, which infuriated Skywalker.

Obi-Wan also had to tell Anakin that the council wanted him to spy on the Chancellor, given the close relationship he had with him. It would only get worse from here. Kenobi would leave for Utapau on the hunt for Grievous, and the next time they came into contact, they’d become enemies.

After Order 66 was activated, Obi-Wan barely escaped with his life. However, he was quick to return to Coruscant, where he recorded a message for Jedi to stay away from the Coruscant. This message would be seen in the Holocron of former Jedi Padawan Caleb Dume, known later in life as Kanan Jarrus, years later during the Imperial regime.

Reuniting with Yoda at the Jedi Temple, they were shocked to find the bodies of dozens of Jedi, with Obi-Wan questioning who could do such a thing. Then, checking the security footage, Kenobi discovered that his best friend, his brother, Anakin, had turned to the dark side.

A Visit To Padmé And The High Ground

Knowing of Anakin and Padmé’s relationship – or part of it – Obi-Wan visits his longtime friend, who is heavily pregnant. He questions if she’s seen Skywalker, and she replies she has, not since the day before. She then lies and says she doesn’t know where he’s gone.

Obi-Wan is forced to tell her that Anakin has turned dark. The senator refuses to believe it even when he tells her he murdered younglings. As he turns to leave the apartment, he asks if Anakin is the father of her unborn child. Her non-response is the only answer he needs.

Kenobi hides in a compartment of Padmé’s ship, following her to Mustafar. The senator has no clue that he’s even there until he appears on the ship’s ramp during her confrontation with Anakin.

Skywalker, who is now almost entirely immersed in the Dark Side and delusional, believes his wife has betrayed him to Obi-Wan. So he starts Force choking the heavily pregnant senator and only stops when Kenobi orders him.

Padmé collapses. Obi-Wan checks to ensure she’s breathing before he confronts his former apprentice. A fierce lightsaber duel ensues across the volcanic surface of Mustafar. Unfortunately, Anakin underestimates Obi-Wan’s ability to fight back and goes leap to deliver a killer blow but gets cut down.

Skywalker loses his remaining organic limbs to Obi-Wan’s lightsaber strike. A devastated Kenobi screams that Anakin was his brother and that he loves him. But, before he climbs back up the hill, he takes Skywalker’s lightsaber, which will end up in the hands of Anakin’s son.

Padmé’s Death And Separating Luke And Leia

Obi-Wan arrives on the landing pad and is summoned by C-3PO, who says Padmé is onboard and they need to leave.

The trio meet with Bail Organa and Yoda on Polis Massa. Padmé gives birth to fraternal twins, a boy, Luke and a girl, Leia. A medical droid approaches the men. It explains that the senator is healthy, but they cannot explain why she is dying.

Being the loyal friend he is, Obi-Wan is in the operating theatre with Padmé as she gives birth. She utters her final words to him, stating she knows that there is still good in her husband. These words would follow on with her son, who would eventually return his father to the Light.

After Padmé’s passing, Obi-Wan, Yoda, and Bail decide to separate the twins. Organa takes Leia, as he and his wife, Queen Breha, had been wanting to adopt a daughter. The trio agree that Luke will be sent with Kenobi to Tatooine to be raised by his aunt and uncle, Owen and Beru Lars.

Before he departs for Tatooine with Luke, Yoda tells Obi-Wan that he has training for him. While he lives out his exile, he will learn from his late master Qui-Gon how to become one with the Force.

The Next Ten Years

In the years that follow, Obi-Wan becomes tired and defeated. The loss of Anakin will continue to haunt him. From a distance, he watches as Luke grows up with a passion for flying.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will see him in a darker state of mind than during the Clone Wars period. It will also have him leave Tatooine for an undisclosed reason. The Jedi Master will confront his past in the most dramatic way possible as Inquisitors suddenly show up.
