foreign royals

On September 19, we’ll say goodbye to Her Majesty The Queen – as will the foreign royals who will gather. Foreign royals will be travelling to England to bid farewell to their kin, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. As we cover the funeral, we wanted to go over which foreign family members will be attending. We’ll also be adding a brief explainer of who they are. Much of this information is coming from Town & Country Magazine.

There are likely a few we missed.

  • Queen Margrethe II of Denmark – Queen of Denmark – distant cousin. Her Majesty The Queen of Denmark is also a distant relative of Prince Philip as they are both descendants of King Christian IX of Demark.
  • Crown Prince Frederik & Crown Princess Mary – Queen Margrethe’s eldest son and heir and his wife; the future King and Queen Consort of Denmark.
  • King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden & Queen Silvia – His Majesty of Sweden is a second cousin of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Crown Prince Alexander of Serbia – The heir to Serbia’s former monarchy, the godson of The Queen – not distantly related. It is unclear if his wife Princess Katarina Karadjordjevic will attend as well.
  • Tsar Simeon II – exiled and former monarch of Bulgaria. A fifth cousin to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, according to Bulgaria Post.
  • King Felipe & Queen Letizia of Spain – the King and Queen Consort of Spain. The king’s father, former King Juan Carlo, is related to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. King Felipe is a third cousin once removed to Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Prince Albert II & Princess Charlene of Monaco – The Prince and Princess Consort of Monaco. Prince Albert II is a seventh cousin twice removed to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
  • King Philippe & Queen Mathilde of Belgium – The King and Queen Consort of Belgium. His Majesty The King of Belgium is related to Queen Elizabeth II but it’s unclear how.
  • Grand Duke Henri & Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg – The Grand Duke is a third cousin once removed to The Queen of England.
  • King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima & Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands – The King, Queen Consort and former Queen of the Netherlands. The King and his mother, Princess Beatrix are distant cousins to Elizabeth II.
  • King Jigme & Queen Jetsun of Bhutan – The King and Queen of Bhutan. They will attend the funeral, despite having never met The Queen, though they have met now-King Charles and Queen Camilla.
  • Emperor Naruhito & Empress Masako – Imperial leaders of Japan.
  • Al-Sultan Abdullah Al-Haj of Pahang & Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah of Malaysia.
